1. Why Buddhism Is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment (Robert Wright)
2. Plastic Free : How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too (Beth Terry)
3. Taking the Leap : Freeing Ourselves from Old Habits and Fears (Pema Chodron)

4. Sapiens : A Brief History of Humankind (Yuval Noah Hurari)
5. Braiding Sweetgrass : Indigneous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants (Robin Wall Kimmerer)

Currently reading these last two at the same time--as well a book about healing spices :)
This challenge has helped me focus..I generally have 4-6 books on the go at the same time. Trying to streamline this approach.

I'm in!

1. Cane River - this was for a book club, which is the only reason I finished it. Five hundred pages of depressing slavery historical fiction, ranging from super depressing slave rape and torture to slightly-less-depressing institutional racism by the end of the saga. Would not recommend.
2. The Road Less Traveled - this is a psychology cult classic from the 70s that's fun to read. In one chapter he mentions in a footnote that "the only healthy marriage is an open marriage." Lol, the seventies were awesome.
3. Down Among the Sticks and Bones - a well-written and darkly funny YA fantasy novella. Think CS Lewis with vampires.

Finished my first book of the year this morning! I've had this one on hold at the library since August and it just finally came in.

1. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

I read this one last year, how did you find it? I liked how the author gradually became more conscious of her environment as her in-book persona ages (scenes from when she was a kid paint a rosier picture, which becomes grittier as she grows).

1. Digital photography for dummies : Considering the amount of pictures I take during trips, I figured it would be good to learn to take better pictures, especially when it's hard to do justice to the nice settings.

Does re-reading books count? I've ordered the last Pillars of the Earth (it's now a trilogy) at the library, so I'll probably read 1 and 2 again once I get close to having it.

I really liked it! And I totally agree on your summary. As I was reading the things that happened to her as a kid, I was floored at how casual she was about it. But I guess maybe at that age and with that type of lifestyle, you would be. I recently found out the author lives just over an hour from me in an area I go to a couple times a year. Now whenever I go I'm going to be looking for her!

I would like to see the movie, but it doesn't seem like it got great reviews. I think Woody Harrelson was the perfect person to portray her dad though!

1. Being Mortal by Atul Gawande
Man, I remember finishing this book and I was like five months pregnant and my husband came into the room and I was just ugly sobbing and I think I scared him with how much I could cry about a book.

Also The Glass Castle was great, reminded me a bit of Bastard out of Carolina in  both style and substance.

I absolutely loved Being Mortal. I gave the book as a present to my aging parents. I’m pretty sure they’re not going to read it though. Well, my Dad’s dead now, so definitely not for him.

Yesterday I finished #3 for the year — The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Shaffer and Barrows.

Great idea! I'm actually shooting for 2-4 books/month, so we'll see if I can get to 50. I have a tendency to read non-fiction, and I'm going to supplement with YA fiction to get to 50.

So far,
An Anthropologist on Mars, Oliver Sachs
Song of the Quarkbeast, Fford

Currently reading:
David and Goliath, Gladwell
Why Buddhism is True, Wright (I will either finish this, or fling it across the room. We'll see..)

Loved Being Mortal. Also, I read The Book of Dust (the new Pullman book) right before the new year started. Recommend!

Just received The Book of Dust for Christmas! I read the His Dark Materials series for the first time last year and absolutely loved it. Sad I didn't know about this series sooner.

Do I get to count books I'm reading to my kid? We're doing longer chapter books now. We just finished Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White and are reading Wonder by R. J. Palacio now. On my own, I am reading Deep Work by Cal Newport.

I'm in again!  Although I gotta say I'm off to a slow start . . . a mere 68 pages into my first book of the year:  Bright Air Black by David Vann, a reimagining of Medea.  I picked it up at random from the new fiction shelves at the library, and while it's really good, it's so vivid and visceral that I seem to be able to read only a few pages at a time.

I'm in.  I read a lot.  (200 books in 2017).  I tend to read pretty broadly, but for 2018 I'd like to do a focus on Russia --- so my goal is to read 50 books in that focus area (non-fiction in related disciplines, fiction written by Russian authors or set in Russia).  So, I'll be tracking that here.   Happy reading everyone.

That sounds like a great idea.  Do you have A Gentleman in Moscow on your list?  I can't recommend because I haven't read it yet, but two friends whose judgment I trust raved about it, so I'm waiting to get it from the library.

Yes. It's a tough book. He describes precisely the experience I had with an aging relative. It is devastating.

1. A Torch Against The Night- Sabaa Tahir- 1/8/18

2. Hounded - Kevin Hearne - In progress

Bracken_Joy, you probably already know about the following two series, but just in case (recommendations made off of Hearne's "Hounded,"
1. Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series (he also wrote a great swords-and-horses fantasy series called the Codex Alera)
2. Benedict Jacka's Alex Verus series

We liked both of these better than Hearn's Iron Druid series (which I liked quite a lot).

Finished Gladwell, sending it right back to the used bookstore from whence it came. Do not recommend.
<80 pages to go on Wright. Finding it annoying -- why did Hinduism get introduced on page 200? You can't make the argument about one-ness and none-ness just on Buddhism and sloppy social science alone?

Will be looking for a fast fictional read next. Perhaps Kevin Hearne, or The Power. Or I may snag something off the kid's shelves, just for a break... My 16-year old recommended Siddhartha...

Yeah, Gladwell sucks. If anyone's looking for a thriller, may I suggest Lexicon by Max Barry? Really fun, fast read.

1. Cane River - this was for a book club, which is the only reason I finished it. Five hundred pages of depressing slavery historical fiction, ranging from super depressing slave rape and torture to slightly-less-depressing institutional racism by the end of the saga. Would not recommend.

3. Down Among the Sticks and Bones - a well-written and darkly funny YA fantasy novella. Think CS Lewis with vampires.
4. The Hating Game - this was just a bubble gum contemporary romcom about a love-hate-love relationship. Super fast and sexy read, recommended as a nice beach read if you like romance.

Ooh, I didn't see this thread before I jumped into the 26+ books one. 50 is a better goal for me since I read a lot of trashy young adult post-apocalyptic sci fi. (Yes, I consider that a genre. Yes, I know what I like).

So far I got pretty into a series (not YA, arguably post-apocalyptic, definitely sci fi): The Expanse. And yes, I loved it.

  • Leviathan Wakes - James Corey
  • Caliban's War - James Corey
  • Abaddon's  Gate - James Corey
  • The Sun & Her Flowers - Rupi Kaur (broke up the space opera with some feminist poetry)
  • Cibola Burn - James Corey
  • Nemesis Game - James Corey
  • Babylon's Ashes - James Corey

Joining this challenge a bit late, but love this idea.  I read a mix of books for school (M.Ed - Secondary Social Studies), theology, and "for fun"

Completed:
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - J.K. Rowling.  Finally finished this series after several years of starts and stops
2. The Way of Kings - Brandon Sanderson.  Great start to what appears to be an amazing series.  Love his work.

In Progress:
Human Diversity in Education - Cushner, McClelland, and Safford.  Reading this one for my Ethics, Equity and Social Justice Class.
Patterns of World History, Vol 1 - von Sivers, Desnoyers, and Stow. Reading for my World History and Culture class.  Vol. 2 up next
Words of Radiance - 2nd book in the series.  Great so far.
Jesus, the Apostles, and the Early Church - Pope Benedict XVI.  I move more slowly through this.

3. The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
4. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
5. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
6. The Secret History by Donna Tartt
7. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (re-read last night since it's been 20 years and my son is reading it in school)

Looks like next up will be The Glass Castle since it just came up at my library this morning. A friend IRL recommended it after we talked about my messed up childhood, and since then I've seen references to it everywhere.

I just finished Mémoires d’Hadrien by Marguerite Yourcenar. I’m counting it as #4. and #5. since I decided to count books in foreign languages at least 2x, depending on how hard I find the language. Actually, I’m counting this novel as 1.89 books, since I’m reading 50 300-page “books” and prorating for longer or shorter works.

Anyway, now it’s on to Yourcenar’s account of how she wrote the novel which will work out to around .25 books.

Long time lurker whom was really inspired by the challenge in 2017. Started in June and finished 37.

For 2018, I am targeting only computer science and coding--as I am inspired to change my life:

1. The Annotated Turing - Petzgold 1.14.2018
2. System Thinking: A Primer - Meadows 1.16.2018
3. The Mythical Man Month - Brooks 1.17.2018
4. Humble Programmer - Dykstra 1.19.2018 (This one was a tease--I am now aware that there are tons more whitepapers to leap down the worm hole!
5. Why's Poignant Guide to Ruby - Stiff 1.20.2018

1. An Anthropologist on Mars, Oliver Sachs
2. Song of the Quarkbeast, Fford
3. David and Goliath, Gladwell
4. Why Buddhism is True, Wright

Currently:
5. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Mark Twain

Queued up:
B is for Burglar, Sue Grafton
Siddhartha, Hesse
Sapiens, A Brief History of Humankind, Harari, if I'm ready for non-fiction again.
Looking for the last Ursula Le Guin novel, Lavinia (because I'm read almost everything else she's written, and I'm trying not to have too many repeats this year).

Funny thing: when I mention to people that I'm doing this, everyone has suggestions (I keep a list on my phone). But I can see them editing their suggestions before they make them. Alas, I like trashy fantasy and science-fiction (at least I used to), and no one recommends trashy reads to me. Guess I have to find them myself... Even the friend with the Sue Grafton recommendation paused before she suggested those books.

  • The Power - Naomi Alderman --> solid. Felt a bit on the nose, but still an enjoyable read and thought provoking in the end.

Haha, tell me you're going to quit before number 27 or whatever she's up to right now. I heard the main character still can't decide which of the two handsome men she wants to settle down with...

I think it's only 24 or so :)  I'm still enjoying them, but I make sure to only read one every 6 months or so.  The audiobook narrator is excellent and since it's such light and entertaining reading it's good for car rides.
