I've been looking for a place to track my reading for the year and this thread seems a good idea (also a place to get goof book suggestions) - mind if I join?

Read:
1. A Year of Ravens (multi author historic fiction - too many authors to name)

Currently Reading:
2. Home - Marilyn Robinson (I'm 90% through this one but it is so beautiful that I can only read tiny bits at a time before I have to close the book and sigh or start crying).
3. Kristin Lavransdatter - Sigrid Undset

I've been having trouble picking out books and diversifying my reading so I"m going to use the PopSugar 2016 book challenge list for the rest of the year:

1. A book based on a fairy tale
2. A National Book Award winner
3. A YA bestseller
4. A book you haven't read since high school
5. A book set in your home state
6. A book translated to English
7. A romance set in the future
8. A book set in Europe
9. A book under 150 pages
10. A New York Times bestseller
11. A book that's becoming a movie this year
12. A book recommended by someone you just met
13. A self-improvement book
14. A book you can finish in a day
15. A book written by a celebrity
16. A political memoir
17. A book at least 100 years older than you
18. A book that's more than 600 pages :Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Unset
19. A book from Oprah's Book Club
20. A science-fiction novel
21. A book recommended by a family member: Home by Marylin Robinson
22. A graphic novel
23. A book that is published in 2016
24. A book with a protagonist who has your occupation
25. A book that takes place during Summer
26. A book and its prequel
27. A murder mystery
28. A book written by a comedian
29. A dystopian novel
30. A book with a blue cover
31. A book of poetry
32. The first book you see in a bookstore
33. A classic from the 20th century
34. A book from the library
35. An autobiography
36. A book about a road trip
37. A book about a culture you're unfamiliar with
38. A satirical book

I am in and looking forward to it as well.

1.  Golden Age by Jane Smiley  (the last book of her trilogy)
2.  The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine by Alexander McCall Smith (I love his heroine from the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series)
3.  The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows (she co-authored the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and I enjoyed that one so I thought I would try this)
4.  An Island Christmas (I'm a sucker for holiday fiction)
5.  Dishing the Dirt by MC Beaton (light mystery series by British author)
6.  The Most Beautiful Walk in the World by John Baxter (I really enjoyed this after I finally got into it.  Requested a couple of his other books from the library)
7: The Hotel on Place Vendome: Life, Death, and Betrayal at the Hotel Ritz in Paris by Tilar Mazzeo  Wow, full of inaccuracies.  Could be an interesting book but so full of errors that it made all of the information suspect.
8.  The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman (requested this from the library based on this thread - thanks!).

Currently reading Paris at the End of the World: The City of Light During the Great War, 1914-1918 by John Baxter

Took a break on Paris to read #9: The Shadow in the North by Philip Pullman (#2 in the Sally Lockhart series).  Already requested the 3rd in the series.

Currently reading The Girl on the Train

Read so far in 2016:

"Dark Days" by D. Randall Blythe
"The Short Drop" by Matthew Fitzsimmons
"Katherine" by Anya Seton
"The Interestings" by Meg Wolitzer
"You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost)" by Felicia Day
"The Blind Side" by Michael Lewis
"The Family Nobody Wanted" by Helen Doss
"A Circle of Children" by Mary MacCracken
"Just A Geek" by Wil Wheaton
"Obsession in Death" by JD Robb
"The Food Lab" by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt
"In The Unlikely Event" by Judy Blume
"The Last Girl" by Joe Hart

"Let's Pretend This Never Happened," by Jenny Lawson.  I SLOGGED through this one.  People told me it was hilarious and clever.  I found it neither.  Written humor is hard to pull off.

"The 5th Wave" by Rick Yancey.  I am more out of touch with popular culture than I realized because I'd never heard of this until the movie was reviewed on Roger Ebert's site.  The review wasn't good, but books are almost always better and that was the case with this one.  Some things were wrapped up a little too neatly, and the drill sergeant's lines are directly ripped off from Full Metal Jacket.  Still, solid writing and the next book's on my radar.

You guys read so much! I only just finished book #4 for the year. And this is A LOT for me. I've just been reading during meals. I've also been alternating between fiction and non-fiction.

I'm not sure which (or all?)  genres you are referring to in terms of humor, but I really enjoy Helen Fielding's fictional work- particularly Olivia Joules as well as Cause Celeb.

I enjoyed it. It's quick and cute and laugh out loud funny, but I also think it would depend on a person's sense of humor. I quite enjoyed her characters in a couple shows and while reading the book I found her life story quite fascinating, especially when she was talking about what was going on in her life during the filming of those shows.

I want to say I read "Cause Celeb"--I know I read "Bridget Jones' Diary" like everyone else.  I think fiction gives more leeway to be funny than nonfiction.  If I compared Felicia Day's book to Jenny Lawson's, I found Day's to be funnier, but sometimes it tried too hard.  Lawson's book tried WAY too hard, and I can't even blame it on her being a millennial because she's not.  :D

19. You're Never Weird on the Internet (almost) - Felicia Day

How was this?  I have it on digital hold from my library and looking forward to reading it.

Thanks!  I was drawn to it because I liked her characters on Eureka and Supernatural --- so i'm hoping I enjoy the book!

I'm not sure which (or all?)  genres you are referring to in terms of humor, but I really enjoy Helen Fielding's fictional work- particularly Olivia Joules as well as Cause Celeb.

Not sure if it's that I'm fast or that I spend so much time reading. I read with breakfast & dinner & after. Probably around 6+ hours on a regular work day.

21. Girl in a Box (Sujata Massey,)

22. If Looks Could Kill (Kate White)
23. A Body to Die for (Kate White)

I'm really happy to have found another series I enjoy- The  Bailey Weggins Mystery Series. I actually began with #4 not realizing it was part of a Series, fortunately these books are stand-alones. The two books above are 1&2.
Btw, the other series I've read through at least three times is The Rei Shimura Mystery Series by Sujata Massey.

Others have already chimed in, but for my part:

1) I read fast.  I always have.  Some material is faster than others (Harry Potter is easier/quicker than Proust).
2) I read during downtime.  I try to fill in the margins in my day with reading.  My kindle is ALWAYS with me, so if I have five minutes to kill - I read.  It's not unusual to see me reading my kindle while in line at the grocery store, riding the metro, waiting for a bus, at happy hour having a drink (assuming I'm alone, of course).
3) I read several books at once.  I generally have at least 3 books going at a time: non-fiction, fiction, and travel.  Sometimes I have two fiction books going (generally a light, easy, fun read and a more serious literary fiction selection.)
4) I dedicate time to reading.  I  read for about an hour at night before bed.  I also built in half an hour into my morning routine that I generally use for reading (unless I wake up feeling groggy and need the extra sleep).

Really, for me, it's all about building routines that emphasize reading.  Some people can't imagine going a day without running or watching TV or writing in their journal, I can't imagine a day where I didn't spend time reading.

3. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - J.K. Rowling
4. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - J. K.Rowling
5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - J.K. Rowling
6. Small Space, Big Harvest (NF)
7. Whole30 (NF)
8. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - J.K. Rowling
9. The Cuckoo's Calling - Robert Galbraith
10. The Silkworm - Robert Galbraith
11. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - J.K. Rowling

12. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - J.K. Rowling
13. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - J.K Rowling

Currently working on:
14. Storm Front - Jim Butcher
15. The Gifts of Imperfection - Brene Brown (NF)
16. Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents - Lindsay C. Gibson (NF)

I find that when I'm reading something heavy, or something that requires a lot of processing, it's good to have something lighter on the go at the same time. Read the Dresden Files for the first time last year and loved them, so they're perfect for this purpose!

Read so far in 2016:

"Dark Days" by D. Randall Blythe
"The Short Drop" by Matthew Fitzsimmons
"Katherine" by Anya Seton
"The Interestings" by Meg Wolitzer
"You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost)" by Felicia Day
"The Blind Side" by Michael Lewis
"The Family Nobody Wanted" by Helen Doss
"A Circle of Children" by Mary MacCracken
"Just A Geek" by Wil Wheaton
"Obsession in Death" by JD Robb
"The Food Lab" by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt
"In The Unlikely Event" by Judy Blume
"The Last Girl" by Joe Hart
"Let's Pretend This Never Happened" by Jenny Lawson
"The 5th Wave" by Rick Yancey

"The Infinite Sea" by Rick Yancey.  It's definitely a second book in a trilogy.  I didn't like this as much as the first book although it wasn't bad.  It foreshadowed a bit too much and I know I'm going to yell I KNEW IT!! at least twice when I read the third book if it keeps on in the current vein.

"The Death of Santini" by Pat Conroy.  Pat Conroy died on Saturday and as I've read most of the novels he's written I decided to read this in his memory.  I've always loved how he used language, but in his nonfiction works it always seems to be "me against the world" and anyone who disagrees with him is in denial.

@Anje--I have to giggle when I see Cassandra Clare's name, as my first encounter with her was the Very Secret Diaries, which remains some of the funniest stuff I've ever read.

I've been known to read at a bar in the middle of the day now & again - though mostly to pass the time on vacatuons, esp.  until dad is released from work, in the height of winter in Alaska :) .
I am always listening to an audio book in the car I might add, while reading another book when I can (several hours in the a.m. & later in the evening).
I also read fairly fast I think, though i am interested to know what others of you consider fast. I do about a page a minute for typical fiction. WAY quicker speed reading non-f obviously. Slower probably for denser type material.

riverffashion - I'm really enjoying it! I tend to fall into such a reading rut with the same couple of genres over and over again. I spent all of last year reading historical fiction and parenting books and was just tired of reading. Then I thought back to a period when I was traveling a lot for work. Every time I was in an airport (usually twice a week) I would ask the airport bookstore cashier for a recommendation and I had a streak where I just read the most awesome (and diverse) things. I still think of it as my magical year of reading.

I'm hoping the book challenge will help me get that feeling again. The research aspect alone is lots of fun for me!

this sounds fun, i want to do this! :)
