I read 76 last year & have decided to focus on writing this year, however I still spend a couple hours a day reading. So.. count me in . pretty sure I'll still reach 50. Mostly to to keep track of what I've read & get ideas :)

1. Revenge Wears Prada
2. Koko be good.

3. The Men I Didn't Marry

4. Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

5. Fight Club

I hav to admit I found Fight Club incredibly boring, though I like the movie... Can't say that too often!

6. The Color of Earth (Kim Dong Hwa)

7. Neverwhere

8. Skim (Mariko Tamaki & Jillian Tamaki)
Pretty cool teen graphic novel

9. Black is for beginnnings
10. Heart in a box

11. Glorie O'Brien's History of the future.

kind of a trippy plotline.. i enjoy some teen fiction, some of it contains light weight scifi themes with regular life, a combination that i enjoy vonnegut is an example of adult literature . if anyone has ideas for this genre let me know.. im not into fullfledged scifi or fantasy though. thanks.

12. I Am Legend

13. The Salaryman's Wife ( first reread- one of my favorites I have read many times, as well as the other ten books in the series.)

14. Over Her Dead Body
15. If You Follow Me (another reread) .

Cookie78, reading a book in English and then in its translation seems like an excellent way to learn another language. I'm going to try it.

  • Villette - Charlotte Brontë
  • The Professor - Charlotte Brontë
  • Shirley - Charlotte Brontë (Jane Eyre remains my favourite of hers)
  • Wind Through the Keyhole - Stephen King (makes me want to reread The Dark Tower series)
  • Angels and Visitations - Neil Gaiman

I've sorted a stack of books from my shelves which I haven't read and don't have any particular attachment to, so my plan is to read through those and then donate them.  I also have a few Terry Pratchett books left, but I think part of me is putting that off so that I still have some of his work to look forward too.

This is what I'm doing as well.  I need to offload some weight books before our next move.  I just need to stop going to the library until I'm finished with the books I own.

I am in and looking forward to it as well.

1.  Golden Age by Jane Smiley  (the last book of her trilogy)
2.  The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine by Alexander McCall Smith (I love his heroine from the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series)
3.  The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows (she co-authored the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and I enjoyed that one so I thought I would try this)
4.  An Island Christmas (I'm a sucker for holiday fiction)
5.  Dishing the Dirt by MC Beaton (light mystery series by British author)
6.  The Most Beautiful Walk in the World by John Baxter (I really enjoyed this after I finally got into it.  Requested a couple of his other books from the library)

7: The Hotel on Place Vendome: Life, Death, and Betrayal at the Hotel Ritz in Paris by Tilar Mazzeo

Wow, #7 was full of inaccuracies.  Could be an interesting book but so full of errors that it made all of the information suspect.

8.  The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman (requested this from the library based on this thread - thanks!).

Yes- I did this last year as well & found that I didn't even enjoy some of my "favorites" anymore, shocker. But I did release some actual still favorites, figuring I can rent from the libraries. It was hard not to rent library books while reading through my shelves, a good indication I would probably never read them again.. And released many without in fact bothering to read. My bookshelf contains approx twenty now (excellent. Used to be something like 200 which I've been dwindling SLOWLY through the years).

  • F - Elantris by Brandon Sanderson (1 Jan)
  • NF - Trust Me, I’m Lying by Holiday (6 Jan)
  • NF - Mindset by Dweck (8 Jan)
  • NF - Brainwashing And Other Forms Of Mind Control by Hyde (9 Jan)
  • NF - Beyond Fear by Schneier (12 Jan)
  • F - How I Became Stupid by Page (13 Jan)
  • NF - Clouds of Glory: The Life and Legend of Robert E Lee by Korda (23 Jan)
  • F - Hyperion by Simmons (1 Feb)
  • NF - When Corporations Rule The World by Korten (9 Feb)

Quite thought provoking. I didn't like his some of his concepts and how he defined the problem, but I couldn't really find much wrong with his "solution." I wonder if this book solidified some of MMM's own views, as there are a lot of parallels. Hell, he even cites Your Money Or Your Life.

I've been looking for a place to track my reading for the year and this thread seems a good idea (also a place to get goof book suggestions) - mind if I join?

Read:
1. A Year of Ravens (multi author historic fiction - too many authors to name)

Currently Reading:
2. Home - Marilyn Robinson (I'm 90% through this one but it is so beautiful that I can only read tiny bits at a time before I have to close the book and sigh or start crying).
3. Kristin Lavransdatter - Sigrid Undset

1. A Year of Ravens (multi author historic fiction - too many authors to name)
2. Home - Marilyn Robinson
3. Taming of the Queen - Philippa Gregory

Kriegsspiel, what did you think of The Forever War? I read it a few months ago and really liked it. Even though it's not at all a recent sci-fi story, I found it refreshing in how it dealt with relativity head on, instead of finding a way to explain it away or ignore it like most sci-fi stories seem to.

I was pretty weirded out by all the sex stuff. I get that he wanted to set up all the homosexual population control stuff later, but it kinda came out of nowhere. Was he a bachelor his whole life? I think a cursory knowledge of human females would preclude that whole facet of the story.

Pretty much the rest of it was great, I appreciated how William kept getting jumped forward in time, the Ender stories first exposed me to this concept. I thought how Haldeman dealt with his "compound savings" was really pretty insightful, I noticed the correlation with his choosing his assignment on the Moon too. Not hard to see how these concepts came out of a Vietnam veteran. I also like how he found a convenient way to explain how we would travel at relativistic speeds. It felt very Mass Effect-y. I have Peace and Free coming up next.

I read 76 last year & have decided to focus on writing this year, however I still spend a couple hours a day reading. So.. count me in . pretty sure I'll still reach 50. Mostly to to keep track of what I've read & get ideas :)

1. Revenge Wears Prada
2. Koko be good.

3. The Men I Didn't Marry

4. Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

5. Fight Club

I hav to admit I found Fight Club incredibly boring, though I like the movie... Can't say that too often!

6. The Color of Earth (Kim Dong Hwa)

7. Neverwhere

8. Skim (Mariko Tamaki & Jillian Tamaki)
Pretty cool teen graphic novel

9. Black is for beginnnings
10. Heart in a box

11. Glorie O'Brien's History of the future.

kind of a trippy plotline.. i enjoy some teen fiction, some of it contains light weight scifi themes with regular life, a combination that i enjoy vonnegut is an example of adult literature . if anyone has ideas for this genre let me know.. im not into fullfledged scifi or fantasy though. thanks.

12. I Am Legend

13. The Salaryman's Wife ( first reread- one of my favorites I have read many times, as well as the other ten books in the series.)

14. Over Her Dead Body
15. If You Follow Me (another reread) .

16. Unterzakhn (Leela Coreman)

17. The Blind Mirror

18. Zen Attitude (hav read several times - book two in an eleven books series).

Bare with me-i will stop quoting myself at nineteen & quote in 20 book segments (I like to track my reading & share with everyone) .

This sounds like a great challenge to take part in!  I have probably 2 dozen books that are at some stage of being finished, and I could really use a kicker to get them going.

Too bad MMM's posts don't count as books!

1. Skill with People by Les Giblin
2. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Condo
3. The Master Plan of Evangelism by Robert E. Coleman
4. Humility: True Greatness by C.J. Mahaney
5. Sell or Be Sold by Grant Cardone
6. The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
7. Money, Purpose, Joy by Matt Bell
8. Romans: The Greatest Letter Ever Written Pt 1 by John Piper
9. Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman
10. The Discipline of Grace by Jerry Bridges
11. The 10x Rule by Grant Cardone
12. How You Can Experience the Adventure of Giving by Bill Bright
13. Good to Great by Jim Collins
14. The Closer's Survival Guide by Grant Cardone
15. Romans: The Greatest Letter Ever Written Pt 2 by John Piper

I'm excited to see what 2016 has in store!

Cookie78, reading a book in English and then in its translation seems like an excellent way to learn another language. I'm going to try it.

Agree!

I'm really enjoying it a lot, but it's slow going for me since I keep looking up lots words I don't know even if I see the translation in the English version. But already I'm learning more words AND more importantly understanding a lot of what I read, both vocab and grammar. :)

11. Mothers, Tell Your Daughters by Bonnie Jo Campbell (1/23) ***

As you can see from all the audiobooks finished lately, I had a couple of long drives.  Most memorable, perhaps, was balling while listening to the end of A Man Called Ove while navigating the beltway during rain.  I regret nothing. (Except, perhaps, that Backman has no more books for me to read yet).
