1. War of the Worlds - H.G. Wells

I read that last year!
I really enjoyed it, but then I also read The Day of the Triffids by John Christopher (of The Chrysalids fame) - I was on a bit of a theme -  which I enjoyed even more.

Also, the HP titles on your list is making me want to read the series again - it's been a long while :)

You mean John Wyndham :-) he's one of my all-time favourite authors. Have you read Trouble With Lichen? That's a fantastic Wyndham, great exploration of feminist themes and the purpose of human life.

I was a bit sad that War of the Worlds didn't do it for me. The protagonist / narrator shat me to tears, and I wasn't feeling tolerant enough to deal with all the bigotry that was just normal at that time.

I'm a bit late getting started, but I enjoyed this challenge last year, and I definitely found I read more as a result. I'm going to aim for 75 this year though. Slow start, because I've been having to take work home the last few weeks, so little reading time, and my first challenge is to read all the books I have that I don't intend to keep, so I can give them away. In fact, I think I'll go organise that pile right now.

1. The long Utopia - Stephen Baxter and Terry Pratchett
2. I am David -
3. Unnamed
4. Feet of Clay - Terry Pratchett
5. Moving Pictures - Terry Pratchett -  think these are both new one s to me, or at least I haven't read more than once and for me. pretty standard TP fare
6. Barchester Chronicles - Anthony Trollope - thought I'd get some classics in now I finally have an e-reader.

Currently Reading (note: I tend to read lots of books at once...I'm very much a mood reader)

I don't think there are strict rules.  If novellas count to you, they count for you.

How was Once Upon a Time in the North?  I love Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, but have never read anything else by him.

I quite liked it, I imagine if you liked HDM you'd probably enjoy this as well. I read Lyra's Oxford awhile back but don't really remember much about it so I think I'll re-read that as well. I just love the characters and the world he built and I'd read just about anything set in that universe.

kind of a trippy plotline.. i enjoy some teen fiction, some of it contains light weight scifi themes with regular life, a combination that i enjoy vonnegut is an example of adult literature . if anyone has ideas for this genre let me know.. im not into fullfledged scifi or fantasy though. thanks.

Read so far in 2016:

"Dark Days" by D. Randall Blythe
"The Short Drop" by Matthew Fitzsimmons
"Katherine" by Anya Seton (a re-read of one of my favorite all-time novels)
"The Interestings" by Meg Wolitzer
"You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost)" by Felicia Day
"The Blind Side" by Michael Lewis (finally got around to reading this, much better than the movie)
"The Family Nobody Wanted" by Helen Doss (I loved this book as a kid and found it in my local library)
"A Circle of Children" by Mary MacCracken (another childhood favorite)
"Just A Geek" by Wil Wheaton (a little too precious, but I've read his blog for years)
"Obsession in Death" by JD Robb (aka Nora Roberts)
"The Food Lab" by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt (currently reading)
"In The Unlikely Event" by Judy Blume (currently reading)

Happy reading, y'all!

So, is this a place to publicly list the books we've read as opposed to listing the book and giving it a review and/or having a discussion?

If each post lists all the books read to date, won't the posts end up getting incredibly long? Do people read each other's long posts?

I'm not trying to throw a turd on your fire if this is how everyone likes it. I'm curious and interested.

This was the format of the 2015 thread, so it naturally continued in the 2016 thread. You're more than welcome to start new threads if you want an in-depth discussion of a particular book :)

It's the first thread I read every morning and I do read all the lists of books. The only problem I have is when the list doesn't indicate which books are new to that list (I bold my new additions, others quote theirs).
I do wish there were more reviews, especially on recommended books, but I scan through each list anyway and google the books that catch my eye based on the name or occasionally a quick review to see if it's something I want to add to my ever growing list.

3.  The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows (she co-authored the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and I enjoyed that one so I thought I would try this)
4.  An Island Christmas (I'm a sucker for holiday fiction)
5.  Dishing the Dirt by MC Beaton (light mystery series by British author)
6.  The Most Beautiful Walk in the World by John Baxter (I really enjoyed this after I finally got into it.  Requested a couple of his other books from the library)

Currently on #7: The Hotel on Place Vendome: Life, Death, and Betrayal at the Hotel Ritz in Paris by Tilar Mazzeo

Wow, I Am Legend is almost entirely different than the movie!
Weird.. Very loosely based I guess

Yes, I remember reading the book a couple years ago and being astounded. The movie was good enough, but it totally threw out all of the underlying themes of how cultural monsters and fairy tales are formed. Very strange.

I tried to reply to those who responded last week, but it looks like the internet ate my post.  Thanks for the info.  I didn't know that Pullman had written anything else.  I've put HDM on my re-read list and added the first of his detective series to my hold list at the library.

1. A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge (finished 1/19).
2. On the Shortness of Life, Seneca (1/24)
3. Building a Better Teacher, Elizabeth Green (2/2)

As a layperson, I was fascinated by Green's book about the evolution and history of teacher training. I have a healthy respect for teachers. What a demanding job! It takes countless hours of preparation outside of school hours to do the job competently. When you consider the pay and the low public regard (my perception) for the profession, it's a wonder anyone goes into it. I'm a bit shocked at how terrible ed schools are at preparing teachers.

Perfect, I just finished my first book for 2016 too:

1.This One Summer by Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki
2. (One of the Earthsea books. Haven't decided yet)

I finished Station Eleven a few months ago. Great dystopian fiction.

1   This One Summer
2   Earthsea Book 1: A Wizard of Earthsea
3   Earthsea Book 2: The Tombs of Atuan
4   Wild Child (short stories)
5   Earthsea Book 3: The Farthest Shore
6   Earthsea Book 4: Tehanu
7   Earthsea Book 5: Tales from Earthsea
8   Earthsea Book 6: The Other Wind
9   Choosing Simplicity: Real People Finding Peace and Fulfillment in a Complex World (10%)
10   The Master and Margarita (16%)
11   Debt: The First 5,000 Years (15%)
12   Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime (10%)
13   The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World
14   1Q84
15   The Graveyard Book
16   Your Money and Your Brain
17   Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No, To Take Control of Your Life
18   The Summer Queen (15%)
19   The Left Hand of Darkness
20   Ready Player One (10%)
21   The Stormlight Archive Book 1: The Way of Kings (10%)
22   The Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression, One Small Change at a Time
23   Bossypants
24   On the Road
25   Confessions of a Wall Street Analyst (ongoing)

The Earthsea trilogy is one of my all time favorites! Might be time for a reread.

Also, have you read "The dispossessed"? One of the few books I kept after I downsized my collection.

I regretted putting off Earthsea for so long! I will look into The Dispossessed. Thanks for the recommendation.

I read 76 last year & have decided to focus on writing this year, however I still spend a couple hours a day reading. So.. count me in . pretty sure I'll still reach 50. Mostly to to keep track of what I've read & get ideas :)

1. Revenge Wears Prada
2. Koko be good.

3. The Men I Didn't Marry

4. Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

5. Fight Club

I hav to admit I found Fight Club incredibly boring, though I like the movie... Can't say that too often!

6. The Color of Earth (Kim Dong Hwa)

7. Neverwhere

8. Skim (Mariko Tamaki & Jillian Tamaki)
Pretty cool teen graphic novel

9. Black is for beginnnings
10. Heart in a box

11. Glorie O'Brien's History of the future.

kind of a trippy plotline.. i enjoy some teen fiction, some of it contains light weight scifi themes with regular life, a combination that i enjoy vonnegut is an example of adult literature . if anyone has ideas for this genre let me know.. im not into fullfledged scifi or fantasy though. thanks.

12. I Am Legend

13. The Salaryman's Wife ( first reread- one of my favorites I have read many times, as well as the other ten books in the series.)

I've been putting off this challenge for two years now, but finally will have the time in 2016!

I'm starting off with some quick, light reads to get some momentum. The plan is to transition to some thicker reading come February.

1. Memory Theater by Simon Critchley
2. A Man Without a Country by Kurt Vonnegut
3. So Long and Thanks for All the Fish by Douglas Adams
4. Deadeye Dick by Kurt Vonnegut

Currently Reading - Discourses and Selected Writings by Epictetus / The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury

I wasn't expecting such a slow down once winter break was over... I need to make more time to focus on reading and stop being so easily distracted.

So far this year:
1. I married you for happiness by Lily Tuck (great book, loved every minute of it)

I'm currently reading:
2. Almost Anywhere : Road Trip Ruminations on Love, Nature, National Parks, and Nonsense

3. Smarty bones by Carolyn Haines (I read mysteries while climbing stairs on my work breaks)

4. Long Upon the Land, Margaret Maron

5. Food Whore, Jessica Tom

2. On the Shortness of Life, Seneca (1/24)
3. Building a Better Teacher, Elizabeth Green (2/2)
4. Living Mindfully, Deborah Schoeberlein David (2/6)

Some interesting bits in David's books, especially on feelings and emotions as mental constructs; however, I would not recommend the book since I could not relate to it. It was co-written with a psychiatrist, and a lot of the book seems directed at people with psychological issues. The book also takes itself and mindfulness a bit too seriously IMO (saying that body scan meditation should only be done with a professional due to the deep psychological issues that can arise...)
