1. War of the Worlds - H.G. Wells

I read that last year!
I really enjoyed it, but then I also read The Day of the Triffids by John Christopher (of The Chrysalids fame) - I was on a bit of a theme -  which I enjoyed even more.

Also, the HP titles on your list is making me want to read the series again - it's been a long while :)

You mean John Wyndham :-) he's one of my all-time favourite authors. Have you read Trouble With Lichen? That's a fantastic Wyndham, great exploration of feminist themes and the purpose of human life.

I was a bit sad that War of the Worlds didn't do it for me. The protagonist / narrator shat me to tears, and I wasn't feeling tolerant enough to deal with all the bigotry that was just normal at that time.

I'm a bit late getting started, but I enjoyed this challenge last year, and I definitely found I read more as a result. I'm going to aim for 75 this year though. Slow start, because I've been having to take work home the last few weeks, so little reading time, and my first challenge is to read all the books I have that I don't intend to keep, so I can give them away. In fact, I think I'll go organise that pile right now.

How was Once Upon a Time in the North?  I love Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, but have never read anything else by him.

I quite liked it, I imagine if you liked HDM you'd probably enjoy this as well. I read Lyra's Oxford awhile back but don't really remember much about it so I think I'll re-read that as well. I just love the characters and the world he built and I'd read just about anything set in that universe.

kind of a trippy plotline.. i enjoy some teen fiction, some of it contains light weight scifi themes with regular life, a combination that i enjoy vonnegut is an example of adult literature . if anyone has ideas for this genre let me know.. im not into fullfledged scifi or fantasy though. thanks.

It's the first thread I read every morning and I do read all the lists of books. The only problem I have is when the list doesn't indicate which books are new to that list (I bold my new additions, others quote theirs).
I do wish there were more reviews, especially on recommended books, but I scan through each list anyway and google the books that catch my eye based on the name or occasionally a quick review to see if it's something I want to add to my ever growing list.

Weird.. Very loosely based I guess

Yes, I remember reading the book a couple years ago and being astounded. The movie was good enough, but it totally threw out all of the underlying themes of how cultural monsters and fairy tales are formed. Very strange.

As a layperson, I was fascinated by Green's book about the evolution and history of teacher training. I have a healthy respect for teachers. What a demanding job! It takes countless hours of preparation outside of school hours to do the job competently. When you consider the pay and the low public regard (my perception) for the profession, it's a wonder anyone goes into it. I'm a bit shocked at how terrible ed schools are at preparing teachers.

I read 76 last year & have decided to focus on writing this year, however I still spend a couple hours a day reading. So.. count me in . pretty sure I'll still reach 50. Mostly to to keep track of what I've read & get ideas :)

kind of a trippy plotline.. i enjoy some teen fiction, some of it contains light weight scifi themes with regular life, a combination that i enjoy vonnegut is an example of adult literature . if anyone has ideas for this genre let me know.. im not into fullfledged scifi or fantasy though. thanks.

Some interesting bits in David's books, especially on feelings and emotions as mental constructs; however, I would not recommend the book since I could not relate to it. It was co-written with a psychiatrist, and a lot of the book seems directed at people with psychological issues. The book also takes itself and mindfulness a bit too seriously IMO (saying that body scan meditation should only be done with a professional due to the deep psychological issues that can arise...)
