« on: January 01, 2016, 08:31:50 AM »
I decided to start up a new thread because I just finished a book this morning.

1. Unwind by Neal Shusterman (finished 1/1/2016)
2. Golden Son by Pierce Brown (currently reading)
3. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel (currently reading)

Perfect, I just finished my first book for 2016 too:

1.This One Summer by Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki
2. (One of the Earthsea books. Haven't decided yet)

I finished Station Eleven a few months ago. Great dystopian fiction.

The 5th Wave
tHe Infinite Sea
Both my Rick Yancey.  Finished these in 2015 but just had to post, such a feel good.  Loved these btw.

Currently reading Titan.  iTs 1000 pages -wish me luck.

I don't know if I am taking on too much but would love to read 50 books in 2016.  Trying to limit my tv watching so I am hoping I will replace it with reading.

I am in, too. Reached 70 last year for a new personal record. First book, started today, is Alone On the Wall by Alex Honnold with David Roberts.

Last month I started rereading A Song of Ice and Fire which will take me a couple months so it's fresh in my head if Winds of Winter comes out later this year.  I also have a handful of (thankfully much smaller) books on my Amazon wishlist to get started on.  I don't think it'll be anywhere close to 50 books, but I'm looking forward to getting back on the horse.  I took several months off from reading anything after finishing grad school and a 10-month long Army professional school in early 2015.

Are we allowed to count audiobooks in our tally? That would really boost my numbers as I listen to several when I'm walking out and about.

So far this year:

1. A Painted House - John Grisham
2. Alias Grace - Margaret Atwood (in progress)

I don't know if I can do 50, but it doesn't hurt to try, especially since I have so many books on my library hold list and my at home pile. :)

Currently reading
1. The Wealthy Barber Returns - Dave Chilton
2. The Tiger - John Vaillant

Are we allowed to count audiobooks in our tally?

I don't see why not! Audio books seem legit. I think everyone approaches this challenge differently and that's OK - I included some graphic novels and books for young adults in my list last year - and will again this year too as they are some of my favourite genres :)

In that case I'll start adding the Great Courses audio lectures I listen to during my commute.  My MIL sends me a set every few months and it takes me about a month to get through one.  Tuesday when I go back to work its "The Vikings."  Last month it was "Barbarians of the Steppes."

I'm in. Definitely read more than 50 in 2015 but I still need to update my tally and post in that thread; my additional goal for 2016 will be to read at least one more book in 2016 than I did in 2015.

Reading is my primary source of entertainment, plus I read quickly, so I usually read well over 50 books a year anyway.  Subscribing to this thread for material ideas.

Read so far in 2016:

"Dark Days," D. Randall Blythe
"The Short Drop," Matthew Fitzsimmons
"Katherine," Anya Seton (a re-read of one of my favorite all-time novels)

I hope to get to 50, that would've been a walk in the park but then I got this neuro thing that has affected memory, concentration and comprehension so I read slow and often have to back track. Reading was my "thing", I read two to three books a week, I just loved it and want it back so I am trying hard.

I'm going to count the book I finished in the NY and 1 new one:

1. Cutting Teeth

2.  Blackout: Remembering the things I drank to forget.

So far I've read three romance books since Jan 1, but I plan on getting some finance books from the library to further my education and read a few more sci fi books you guys suggested last year - that's the plan at least.

That's one of my favorite books of all time, read it 12 years ago. I always mix up the title with the sequel "A Deepness in the Sky" which I also liked.
I'm really enjoying it! Looking forward to Deepness.

I'm fond of genre fiction and I read fast, and I'm a librarian, so I'm going for 100.

But so far just at 1:

1. The Game by Laurie King (Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russell series)

Count me in.

My record for a year was 123 books in 2010. I need to get back into the habit of reading books instead of just wasting time on Reddit.

1. Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans, by AJ Baime (re-read last week).

I've been putting off this challenge for two years now, but finally will have the time in 2016!

I'm starting off with some quick, light reads to get some momentum. The plan is to transition to some thicker reading come February.

1. Memory Theater by Simon Critchley
2. A Man Without a Country by Kurt Vonnegut

Currently: So Long and Thanks for All the Fish by Douglas Adams (started this morning, should finish tonight or tomorrow)

The Collapse of Parenting by Leonard Sax, MD (Started 1/3/16, almost finished)

As the father of two boys (13 and 10), this book has scared the crap out of me --- and offers some very sound explanations for how we got to where we are as a nation of parents in 2016.

I'm attempting "The Interestings" by Meg Wolitzer but I'm really not liking the main character.  Also I'm not a super-huge fan of "literary" novels.

Felicia Day's "You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost)" is going down a lot easier.

Read so far in 2016:

"Dark Days," D. Randall Blythe
"The Short Drop," Matthew Fitzsimmons
"Katherine," Anya Seton (a re-read of one of my favorite all-time novels)
"The Interestings" by Meg Wolitzer
"You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost)" by Felicia Day

I made it through "The Interestings."  The pace picked up but basically it was "The Big Chill" that started out at a summer camp.  "You're Never Weird on the Internet" was better, but Day tried a little too hard to be funny.

I am impressed how some people are able to be currently reading more than one book. I find I cannot do that. I am the type of person where I have to finish one book before I start a new book.

I used to be the same. Now for some reason my attention span is so bad I often switch books every 10-20 minutes.... except when I get heavily invested in the characters and can't put one book down (and even then, every chapter or so I have to put the book down, do something else for 5 min like check this forum, then go back to reading).

I'm hoping that by reading more books and less internet, my attention span will come back up to normal levels.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
