I've been making an effort this year to have at least 50% of the books I read be by women - as it currently stands, I am at 27/43 or 63%....

Nothing against male authors of course, I just noticed that in previous years I predominantly read books by (often white) men (eg: I've had goals in previous years to read a lot of classics from the 18th/19th/early 20th c.). Trying to include a wider range of more diverse voices this time around.

Anyone else have similar goals?

Yes. I want to read a more diverse set of American authors. I'm mostly not reading non-US authors this year, but a few Brits have slipped in. Keeping a list helped me notice that I wanted to read more science-oriented books, so I added some.

In 2017, I might focus more on non-US authors.

I'm at 38 books now. After I saw this thread, I calculated that I might be able to reach 50 by the end of this year. We'll see.

63. Mindset: The New Psychology of Success - Carol S. Dweck

What did you think of the Carol Dweck book? I've read the first half and had to return it to the library. I'm finding it inspiring and can see how my mindset has changed (for the better) over the years.

I have it on order from the library again, so I can read the second half.

I found it quite fascinating and I can see myself a little bit in both mindsets. Mostly growth mindset I think, but I certainly discovered some fixed mindset traits in myself that have been subconsciously holding me back.

Thanks for the reminder. I have a habit of reading books like this and thinking they have awesome ideas, then over time forgetting to apply them to my life.

You're welcome. =-) When I am really rolling, I apply the ideas to my life right away and then they are incorporated. However, it doesn't always happen that way.

I read the 1st 3 books in the series last year.... things start to go downhill after the 3rd, IMO. I read about 30% of the 4th and had to stop, as it just got too repetitive. I absolutely loved Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of Horses though & could not put them down at the time. Good light fiction, well-researched, interesting protagonist,  creative plot, plus just the right touch of melodrama ;) I'm reading Outlander now and find it similar in terms of pacing, drama, & tone.

also:

48. On Beauty - Zadie Smith (in progress)

I will add outlanded to my list of future books to read. A guy at work said a similar thing to you, first 3 books are great but then its not so good after that, will see how i go with the sequels

That is a good goal, I havent really thought about it before but I may start doing something similar.
