@cautiouspessmist - Weekends are the best.

The best days (like today) are when I finish up several books that I have going on and get started on brand new books.

8. Zodiac - Neal Stephenson

I love that book. It's one of the few I keep a copy of. The plot is great, its got boats, and his descriptions don't sound dated as science advances. Plus, it's not 1000 pages long. I enjoy Stephenson's epics, but man they are heavy to hold up.

I'm finishing up Just Kids by punk icon Patti Smith, which I have to say has been one of the best books I've read this year, possibly my favourite. I'm absolutely devouring it.  It documents her life & relationship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe in NYC in the late 1960s-70s & the art / music culture there at the time (think Chelsea Hotel, Warhol's Factory, etc...).

I'm looking for recommendations of other similar books - especially memoirs by women who went against the mainstream or did things that were unconventional at the time? Thoughts? I have read The Glass Castle / Half Broke Horses / My Life in France / Persepolis,  etc...  those are in a similar vein & I loved them all.... Suggestions welcomed!

Allsummerlong - I loved "The Sisters: The Sage of the Mitford Family" by Mary Lovell. It is about, not one, but six (really more like 5) trailblazing women all from the same family.

The goodreads summary for you: This is the story of a close, loving family splintered by the violent ideologies of Europe between the wars. Jessica was a Communist; Debo became the Duchess of Devonshire; Nancy was one of the best-selling novelists of her day; the ethereally beautiful Diana was the most hated woman in England; and Unity Valkyrie, born in Swastika, Alaska, would become obsessed with Adolf Hitler.

Got side-tracked by doing some re-reading of Bujold's Vorkosigan series. So the new books read list is quite short.

26. Kris Longknife: Unrelenting - Mike Shepherd
I've liked the rest of the Kris Longknife books but this was awful. The space battle scenes were very flat and the rest of it was a pregnancy symptom diary.
27. The Queen's Poisoner - Jeff Wheeler
Nice YA fantasy. Will read the next one out soon.
28. Shadow Study - Maria V. Snyder
7th in this series. Nice story

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd - Female abolitionists when women were not supposed to have opinions
Euphoria by Lily King  - Inspired by the story of Margaret Mead, an anthropologist and has a love triangle...
Circling the Sun by Paula McLain - Loosely based on Beryl Markham who was a female horseracer, pilot and general social tradition "bucker" in colonial Africa
