riverffashion - I'm really enjoying it! I tend to fall into such a reading rut with the same couple of genres over and over again. I spent all of last year reading historical fiction and parenting books and was just tired of reading. Then I thought back to a period when I was traveling a lot for work. Every time I was in an airport (usually twice a week) I would ask the airport bookstore cashier for a recommendation and I had a streak where I just read the most awesome (and diverse) things. I still think of it as my magical year of reading.

I'm hoping the book challenge will help me get that feeling again. The research aspect alone is lots of fun for me!

this sounds fun, i want to do this! :)

I've decided not to do this particular challenge, but as a result have become interested in seeking other challenges & have decided for example to read more classics. Also looking at top lists for various genres, and finding particular books of interest.
Good fun. :)

Huh, interesting challenge. Also, don't understand how some of you know what 'record years' are. I have never counted exactly how many books I read. I know that it was in the hundreds when I was younger. I'll have to sit down and see if I can remember everything in order to work up a list later.

Last year was the first time I kept track- I was surprised at how much I read! 76. And this year I'm already in the high 20's .
As a kid and teenager I read tons more, like you. I'm wishing I had kept track my whole life, that would be pretty interesting I think. A very loooooong list.

I started keeping a simple Excel file in 2013. I get a nice sense of accomplishment looking back at all the books I've read since then.

Yeah, if I had only kept track. What a list that would make.

So, here's my list so far this year. At least everything that I can remember for sure. I'll add to it if I come across anything else I finished and forgot about.

1. Soul Hunter - Aaron Dembski-Bowden
2. Question and Answer - Poul Anderson
3. Necromancer - Gordon R. Dickinson
4. I am Slaughter - Dan Abnett

6. Arrows of the Queen*

*technically these are an omnibus, but they're three separate books, so I'm counting them.

1.  Golden Age by Jane Smiley  (the last book of her trilogy) (Jan 2)
2.  The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine by Alexander McCall Smith (I love his heroine from the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series)
3.  The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows (she co-authored the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and I enjoyed that one so I thought I would try this)
4.  An Island Christmas (I'm a sucker for holiday fiction)
5.  Dishing the Dirt by MC Beaton (light mystery series by British author)
6.  The Most Beautiful Walk in the World by John Baxter (I really enjoyed this after I finally got into it.  Requested a couple of his other books from the library)
7.  The Hotel on Place Vendome: Life, Death, and Betrayal at the Hotel Ritz in Paris by Tilar Mazzeo  Wow, full of inaccuracies.  Could be an interesting book but so full of errors that it made all of the information suspect.
8.  The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman (requested this from the library based on this thread - thanks!).
9.  The Shadow in the North by Philip Pullman (#2 in the Sally Lockhart series).  Already requested the 3rd in the series. (Feb 25)
10. The Girl on the Train (March 1)
11. The Map Thief by Michael Blanding (March 12)
12. The Tiger in the Well by Philip Pullman (the last in the Sally Lockhart series) (March 16)

Currently reading Paris at the End of the World by John Baxter

Mom & I hav decided at my prompting to do a book club just the two of us for now. Exciting now to think about which books. We will alternate selection, while okaying each one. We will discuss once a month.
So I will of course keep reading all my other books & listening to audio in the car. Should be fun .

I'm late to the challenge, but I'm in again!  I had fun with this challenge last year, and I'm sure I read more than I otherwise would have.

Here's where I am so far:

1. The Comedy of Errors - Shakespeare
2. My Struggle, Book 3 - Karl Ove Knausgaard
3. The Wordy Shipmates - Sarah Vowell
4. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot
5. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - JK Rowling
6. Between You and Me - Mary Norris
7. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - Rowling
8. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - Rowling
9. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - Rowling
10. The Liar's Club - Mary Karr (in progress)

Aside:  I hadn't planned to binge on the Harry Potter books.  I just wanted to read one of 'em because I felt like a cultural illiterate never having read them or seen the movies.  I'd always written them off as kiddie books.  But once I started I kinda got hooked!  And I see I'm not the only one here who's reading them this year.

They're so good! I read them all when they first came out... I am thinking about re-reading them all this year, but there are so many OTHER books that I also want to read ;)  You're about to get to my fave of the series, book 5 - The Order of the Phoenix. I loved the tone of that book, and the major world-building/expanding that happens in it.

Heading to the library today to pick that one up!

8.  The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman (requested this from the library based on this thread - thanks!).
9.  The Shadow in the North by Philip Pullman (#2 in the Sally Lockhart series).  Already requested the 3rd in the series. (Feb 25)

12. The Tiger in the Well by Philip Pullman (the last in the Sally Lockhart series) (March 16)

Currently reading Paris at the End of the World by John Baxter

So glad you're reading the Sally Lockhart books!

And really enjoying them.  Never would have found them without this thread.  Did you read the last one, the one that doesn't really include Sally but centers on Adalaide, Becky, and Jim?  My county library system doesn't seem to carry it and I can't decide how much effort to put into trying to get it.

Yeah, if I had only kept track. What a list that would make.

So, here's my list so far this year. At least everything that I can remember for sure. I'll add to it if I come across anything else I finished and forgot about.

1. Soul Hunter - Aaron Dembski-Bowden
2. Question and Answer - Poul Anderson
3. Necromancer - Gordon R. Dickinson
4. I am Slaughter - Dan Abnett
5. Predator, Prey - Rob Sanders
6. Arrows of the Queen* -Mercedes Lackey
7. Arrow's Flight* -Mercedes Lackey
8. Arrow's Fall* -Mercedes Lackey

*technically these are an omnibus, but they're three separate books, so I'm counting them.

9. Magic's Pawn* - Mercedes Lackey
10. The Emperor Expects - Gav Thorpe

11. Magic's Promise* - Mercedes Lackey

I know it seems kind of slow, but I'm actually working on 6 books at the moment, so I should be adding a few more here shortly.

It's an autobiography (of sorts, it speculates in a academic way about what we do and can know) about Geirmund Heljarskinn, one of the first Viking settlers on Iceland. I'm fairly sure it hasn't yet been translated into English yet, but I assume it will be - it has sold well here.

Ah, makes sense. I did find a book titled 'the black viking', but it was written in the 70s (IIRC) and is a fictional book about an african who finds himself living as a viking. Also sounds interesting.

I'm determined to go through all my books - read them and keep only the ones I totally love.  The two books I've read so far this year are:

1) The Feast Nearby - love this book, it's about budgeting $40 a week for food from a food writer
2) Choosing Simplicity

Now instead of television, I will be reading all the books I have piled around.

If anyone has suggestions for books set in Indiana or a Romance set in the future please give me your recs! Am currently reading my National Book Award selection but will be ready to move on to my next books soon.

For the book set in Indiana- I don't know how to do attachments, but I searched the subject on google and found a couple lists in good reads, etc.
