Hey @Rosy and @Raenia,
you have both been so kind to start August threads and I really want to join - can we use one of them?
I will post this in both threads and suggest we use Raenias, as it is a couple of minutes older?  (just to choose one, it really doesn't matter)

Oy! I just bailed on a bad fit role at work, so I have some actually time to think straight and set some goals for this month.

1. Focus on clearing out the panty and freezer. Buy only fresh produce & dairy until all of the frozen food is gone!
2. Track my eating better on my LoseIt app. Can I make it 31 days in a row? It really does seem to help me eat a more healthy diet.
3. Walk 2-3 times per week. This is a low bar, I know, but it's damn hot here and I like to use that as an excuse to stay inside. 12 times in a month. Let's see if I can do it!

3 goals is probably enough for me for now. Copying these into my personal tracking spreadsheet so I have a reminder.

Just posted my final update in the July thread, lol.

Repeat goals

1) Sleep - bring average sleep time up to >7 hrs/night (current 4 week average is ~ 6 hrs 35 minutes, widely variable from night to night)
2) Exercise - spin, lift, or run 3x/week.  Try to increase dead lift max to 220 lbs (currently at 200 x 5-ish, lacking in grip strength)
3) Food - track all the food, stay at or under calorie goal daily - I'll also settle for weekly average, but daily is better.  Reassess calorie goal at the end of the month vs weight.
4) Mental health - yoga 3 days/week.
5) Figure out what I need to do to get a will written

New goals
6) Keep up on my book club for The New Jim Crow - read prologue and Chapter 1 before 8/11.
7) Practice my Spanish 6 days/week on DuoLingo.
8) Refinance our house if we can get the insanely low rate that our mortgage broker quoted us (a full percent lower than our current mortgage, which would save us almost $200/mo even rolling refinancing fees into the existing balance).
9) Don't gain any weight

August - getting back to work, selling (hopefully) the house due to divorce (non-wanted by me).  I think I have to be kind to myself also this month. Soon this will be over.

Week 1: work for one week + get the house in order for open house. Do not kill ex-husband when he doesn't take care of his crap. As I said, soon this will be over.
Week 2: take the kids on a nice low-key trip. Do not kill any of the travel companions, not the kids, not the other family we are travelling with.
Week 3 and onwards: back to work for real. Keep up with the tasks and be a good colleague in general.

  • Yoga as many mornings as possible.
  • Better sleep, try to be in bed by 10pm, lights out at 10.30 pm when working the next day. Try to go to bed early and rise early also during weekends.
  • Get back to walking. July was actually not that bad. I am still above 8 000 steps/day on average for 2020. Goal is 232 500 for August = 7 500/day.
  • Italian on DuoLingo every day. Might listen to some podcasts also.
  • Try to not gain any weight. Will be difficult, as I eat when stressed and this will most likely be a rough month. Starting the month at 71.3 kilos.
  • Keep in touch w/friends. Maybe another zoom meeting.
  • Keep in touch w/parents.
  • Keep money-tracking up to date and plan for the future.
  • Continue practise proper writing on the keyboard.
  • Set up Pokemon Go for DS2 if he wants it.

August

(1) meet with banker regarding options for investment property
(2) gather information on current life insurance coverage, evaluate if appropriate
(3) bake cookies for friends with new babies
(4) figure out why I have $75 remaining on DCFSA and fix it
(5) bake one loaf of bread that is dark and crusty
(6) sleep in tent in living room with my child in preparation for September camping trip
(7) make baby book for (almost three year old) child

July update:

(1) Continue swimming and lifting three days / week.  **success**
(2) Use all of the produce coming out of my garden.  **failure - I can't keep up with the cucumbers!  not growing them next year**
(3) Rent a tiller and prepare yard for fall landscaping.  **failure - too hot and decided to postpone planting until september to wait for sales**
(4) Get wills signed (been a saga).  **success**
(5) Pay off 401k loan.  **success -  woohoo!**
(6) Watch one movie / week with partner.  **success  - p.s., jaws is awesome**

BONUS: increased my 401k contribution to ensure that I max it out this year!

Just keep swimming, y'all!

Laying it down for August:

1.  Journal a little bit every day, even weekends.

2.  Do some "morning activity" every day before 9am.  If it is a full workout, great.  If it is a 15 minute walk around the neighborhood, that's fine too.  The goal here is consistency.

3.  Bedtime before 11pm, every day.

4.  Avoid distracting city forum and political blog.

5.  Finish current novel (Cormac McCarthy) and read one full new novel (not a boring self-help or investment book, a fun novel) and log it on the MMM book reading thread.

6.  Weigh in at under 205 before the end of the month.

Ok, that's it.  Going to keep it simple.  Bon voyage!

I call the period leading up to the presidential election as "silly season."  I am going to need to think of strategies to tune it out.

3) Food - track all the food, stay at or under calorie goal daily - I'll also settle for weekly average, but daily is better.  Reassess calorie goal at the end of the month vs weight. - Tracked 7/7 days.  Not terrible on calories except yesterday, because we had birthday cake and ice cream for my sister.

Super in progress!  All documents signed, rate locked in at 2.625%, hopefully will be complete this week.

Week 1: work for one week + get the house in order for open house. Do not kill ex-husband when he doesn't take care of his crap. As I said, soon this will be over. This has been accomplished. It wasn't easy but it was worth it. Work was great. ExDH was an idiot from time to time but I told him so and he agreed and managed to pull through as well. (Example: day before viewing - a lot of work still to do, he says: I think I will just go for a run, this will not take long... I told him to do his part and then he could go out running. We ended up working until 9pm, still had some to do next morning. He realised he had been an idiot. Time management is not his best trait, and this experience will not last for him, but soon not my problem anymore).
Week 2: take the kids on a nice low-key trip. Do not kill any of the travel companions, not the kids, not the other family we are travelling with. Travelling now and it is ok. Kids tired from everything with moving houses and staying up late here so they are excused for at least parts of their bad temper. Most of the time good though. Other family really want to run the show their way, and we tag along for some things, but I told them already when we booked that we will not do everything together, so it's going pretty well. I am really happy I decided on this actively before so I it is much easier to respond the way I waant to.

  • Yoga as many mornings as possible.
  • Better sleep, try to be in bed by 10pm, lights out at 10.30 pm when working the next day. Try to go to bed early and rise early also during weekends.

Week 2 update

Repeat goals
1) Sleep - bring average sleep time up to >7 hrs/night (current 4 week average is ~ 6 hrs 35 minutes, widely variable from night to night) - Week 1, 6 hr 5 min. Week 2 6 hr 40 minutes, getting better

4) Mental health - yoga 3 days/week. - Week 1 - 3/3.  Week 2 - 4/3, yoga is nice
5) Figure out what I need to do to get a will written - Week 1 and 2 Still no...

New goals
6) Keep up on my book club for The New Jim Crow - read prologue and Chapter 1 before 8/11. - Chapter 1 finished. New goal, finish Chapter 2 by 8/25.
7) Practice my Spanish 6 days/week on DuoLingo. - Week 1 - 7/6 Week 2 - 5/6
8) Refinance our house if we can get the insanely low rate that our mortgage broker quoted us (a full percent lower than our current mortgage, which would save us almost $200/mo even rolling refinancing fees into the existing balance). Still waiting on underwriting, but in progress
9) Don't gain any weight - I've realized my scale will occasionally add/drop 3-4 lbs, but it's super inconsistent, and now I don't know if I really gained 4 lbs this week or if I'm right where I started.

Update - sort of mid-month.

Week 1: work for one week + get the house in order for open house. Do not kill ex-husband when he doesn't take care of his crap. As I said, soon this will be over. This has been accomplished. I am really happy I decided on this actively before so I it is much easier to respond the way I want to. So this continued according to plan. We had a loooong relaxing few days, and we had fun.

So now it is back to school and work - a somewhat more normal life. We have sold the house and it went really well, but we are now exhausted. Must try to get back into regulare routines.

  • Yoga as many mornings as possible. Not really. So tired. See no.2.
  • Better sleep, try to be in bed by 10pm, lights out at 10.30 pm when working the next day. Try to go to bed early and rise early also during weekends.Must try to go to bed earlier, but DS1 is having problems falling asleep and both kids wake up during the nights. I assume this will get better soon, currently just back to school (second day today) and a heatwave making it hard to sleep well.
  • Get back to walking. July was actually not that bad. I am still above 8 000 steps/day on average for 2020. Goal is 232 500 for August = 7 500/day. Slightly below average, but this will increase in few days - back to work and cooler weather.
  • Italian on DuoLingo every day. Might listen to some podcasts also.
  • Try to not gain any weight. Will be difficult, as I eat when stressed and this will most likely be a rough month. Starting the month at 71.3 kilos. I cannot find the scales, put them away for house viewing. But I believe I am over. Hope to lose some before end of month.
  • Keep in touch w/friends. Maybe another zoom meeting.
  • Keep in touch w/parents.Yes, met them outdoors, keeping distance.
  • Keep money-tracking up to date and plan for the future. Have done some, but now that house is sold, I can do more.
  • Continue practise proper writing on the keyboard.
  • Set up Pokemon Go for DS2 if he wants it. Completed. He does not play much though, but it's fine.

Week 3 update

This week was a total loss for some goals, due to an unexpected house problem throwing our schedules for a loop.  A contractor put his foot through our bedroom ceiling, so we've been sleeping on an air mattress in the living room since last Saturday.  Upside is I got a lot of walks in, to get away from the dust in the house.  Downside is just about everything else.

Continued Goals:
1. Better sleep - maintain bedtime routine, hit lights-out target at least 28/31 days. (Last month 25/31)
 - 16/21, very bad due to above
2. Meditate daily - 10 min per day, target 25/31 days. (Last month 23/31)
 - 13/21, very bad due to loss of schedule
3. Exercise - take a walk or exercise every day. Target 20/31 days. (Last month 9/31)
 - 12/21, surprisingly good week
4. Reading - Read 4 books, taking notes on 1
 - 5/4.  Notetaking book acquired but not started
5. Try something difficult or new - target 3 attempts (Last month 4)
 - 6/3
6. Show Up - Connect with people at least twice per week (Target 8)
 - 11/8
7. Bring People Together - Host a (remote) gathering at least three times
 - 4/3, several family members have come over to help and we took them to dinner at an outdoor dining place
8. Cherish/Create Traditions (Target at least 1)
 - Complete
9. Make Time for Fun.  Target 25/31 days. (Last month 20/31)
 - 7/21, none at all this week

New Goals:
10. Listen Actively
 - 9/21
11. Don't Argue on Autopilot
 - One failure, one success so far.  Fortunately, there haven't been a lot of argument-precipitating moments to judge
12. Do Tasks When Asked
 - 13/21
13. Appreciate When Others do Tasks
 - 12/21

Bonus goals:
11. Mending - repair something from the pile (target 1)
 - 1 complete
12. Declutter - find something to donate (target 2)
 - Done - added a few things that were given to us, that I realized we weren't using and didn't need

Week 3 update

Repeat goals
1) Sleep - bring average sleep time up to >7 hrs/night (current 4 week average is ~ 6 hrs 35 minutes, widely variable from night to night) -
Week 1, 6 hr 5 min.
Week 2 6 hr 40 minutes, getting better.
Week 3, 6 hr 53 minutes
2) Exercise - spin, lift, or run 3x/week.  Try to increase dead lift max to 220 lbs (currently at 200 x 5-ish, lacking in grip strength) -
Week 1 - 5/3 exercise sessions, DL at 205.
Week 2 - lifted 3 days, another set of DL at 205
Week 3 - lifted 3 days, got to 210 x 5 for DL with no straps, increased all warm up weights. Not sure I'll make it to 220 in the next week, lol, but I'm still progressing.
3) Food - track all the food, stay at or under calorie goal daily - I'll also settle for weekly average, but daily is better.  Reassess calorie goal at the end of the month vs weight. -
Week 1 - Tracked 7/7 days, over by ~9% for the week.
Week 2 - Tracked 7/7/days, 7 calories over goal average.
Week 3 - tracked 7/7 days, under by 75 calories
4) Mental health - yoga 3 days/week. -
Week 1 - 3/3.
Week 2 - 4/3
Week 3 - 5 or 6 days of yoga this week
5) Figure out what I need to do to get a will written -
Week 3 Still no...

New goals
6) Keep up on my book club for The New Jim Crow - read prologue and Chapter 1 before 8/11. -
Chapter 1 finished.
New goal, finish Chapter 2 by 8/25.
7) Practice my Spanish 6 days/week on DuoLingo. -
Week 1 - 7/6
Week 2 - 5/6
Week 3, 6/6
8) Refinance our house if we can get the insanely low rate that our mortgage broker quoted us (a full percent lower than our current mortgage, which would save us almost $200/mo even rolling refinancing fees into the existing balance).
Still waiting on underwriting, but in progress
9) Don't gain any weight -
I think I'm losing slowly but steadily.  I might maybe be adding some muscle, too, so that's a plus.

Update w/less than a week left

So this went according to plan. We had a loooong relaxing few days, and we had fun.

We are back to school and work - a somewhat more normal life, but not really in routines yet. We have sold the house and it went really well, but we are now exhausted. I am sooo looking forward to moving/when ex is moving out.

  • Yoga as many mornings as possible. Not really. So tired. See no.2.
  • Better sleep, try to be in bed by 10pm, lights out at 10.30 pm when working the next day. Try to go to bed early and rise early also during weekends.Must try to go to bed earlier, but both kids wake up during the nights.
  • Get back to walking. Goal is 232 500 for August = 7 500/day. This is happening, some days more and some less, but above plan, Aug average is 8 600. I need less than 10 000 steps to reach goal.
  • Italian on DuoLingo every day. Might listen to some podcasts also. Yes, I did miss on open house day, but this is abolutely ok. No podcasts yet though.
  • Try to not gain any weight. Will be difficult, as I eat when stressed and this will most likely be a rough month. Starting the month at 71.3 kilos. Found scales, am at 70.9. I will have to be ok with ending there for this month if that's the case.
  • Keep in touch w/friends. Maybe another zoom meeting. Yes working on this. I think I am also getting a new internet friend, she is planning to do a trip I may do in 3-5 years so I contacted her to keep in touch and had a very nice reply.
  • Keep in touch w/parents.Yes, met them outdoors, keeping distance. Also trying to keep up w/phone calls.
  • Keep money-tracking up to date and plan for the future. Have done some, but now that house is sold, I can do more. Need to spend some more time on this.
  • Continue practise proper writing on the keyboard. Yes, doing Duolingo on computer has really helped. Still a long way to go though, but happy so far.
  • Set up Pokemon Go for DS2 if he wants it. Completed. He does not play much though, but it's fine.

Not a great month, unfortunately:

August

(1) meet with banker regarding options for investment property - success - realized doesn't make sense right now but holy cow banks will lend a lot of money
(2) gather information on current life insurance coverage, evaluate if appropriate - failure
(3) bake cookies for friends with new babies - success
(4) figure out why I have $75 remaining on DCFSA and fix it - success
(5) bake one loaf of bread that is dark and crusty - failure (but not without trying!)
(6) sleep in tent in living room with my child in preparation for September camping trip - failure (but hopeful for labor day weekend)
(7) make baby book for (almost three year old) child - failure :-(
