2014 Savings Rate Goals
« on: January 04, 2014, 04:57:17 PM »
I've been thinking about what I want to accomplish in the 2014 year as far as savings rate and figured I would start a thread for whoever wants to join me.  I will be posting monthly savings rate updates throughout the year in order to track my progress at hitting my goal for 2014.

My 2014 Savings Rate Goal = 50%

Let's do this!

I assume your savings rate goal is based on net income, instead of gross income?

My 2014 savings rate goal is 66%, based on net income.

Yes, it is based on Net Income.

90%. Currently I hit 90% on some months, but not all. I would like to be more consistent, which means I need to raise my income. Cutting spending isn't really an option for me.

Currently hitting 82%. With some small raises due this year I'd like to reach 85% by the end of the year.

65% net income.

Where do you put your "savings"?

All of my monthly "Savings" currently goes to Investments across various accounts including 401k, Ira, and taxable.

I don't track my spending, but judging from the growth of my net worth, I tend to save 50% or more. I would be happy to maintain this level for the first half of 2014. For the second half of 2014, I would be thrilled to have anything more than a 0% savings rate, seeing as I'll be quitting my full-time job for a sabbatical involving significant travel. I'm bracing myself for a negative savings rate (i.e. dipping into my principal), but hopefully I can pick up some freelance work to mitigate that - not counting on it, but I'll definitely look into it.

Based on the YNAB budget we are at 68%, so it should fluctuate around there. We put it towards adoption/student loans.

I want to have it at 75% by the end of the year.

Wow, I'm impressed by these saving ratios! I did 37% in 2013 and will try to reach 50% in 2014. This will however require quite some willpower!

I focus on spending rather than saving.  In 2013, of my take home income, I spent 25% of it on everything other than loan payments.

I expect it to be about the same in 2014, although I am considering a rather large non-mustachian purchase.....

This is a great idea! I will join you in posting monthly rates, as it will keep me accountable.

Average = 45% of net income
Best in 2013 = 52%
Goal for 2014 = 60%

The other posters have amazing savings rates. I am in awe and hope to catch up.

Right now, we're got our automatic savings % set to 57%.

We've just increased our automatic savings by 55% over what they were last year.

I would like to hit 65% of savings, but I'm going to wait a few months before attempting to ratchet up the savings level again.

I would love to hit a rate of 50%. Should finally be starting a new job in the next few days. Downside is that it's a depressing $10/hr. Going to keep looking for something better. With the changes I've made since losing my job last year, I'm pretty sure I could hit 50% if I could get my income level back to what it was back then (upper 40s). I really wish I had discovered MMM in it's current form three years ago.

One possible bit of savings could come later this year. I have friends who are buying their first house later this month. We've been talking about me renting a room from them. Helps them get a bit of extra money and me save. If it works out and I can sell my condo I think I could get my total monthly expenses below $1k which is my current outlay just for my housing costs now. Stupid HOA/COA fees. If I had it to do over, I think I would have stayed in my apartment instead of buying a condo.

Expecting 67.9% of our take home split up into 401k max, 2 IRA's (not sure if Roth or non-deductible traditional IRA yet), and remainder into investments. Savings goal does not include another $10K our employers will place into our 401K's this year....yeah for free money!

An absolute stretch would be 70%+, depending on how a few things shape out.

Trying to cut expenses, reduce utilities, go crazy on groceries and pantry eating, sell some crap sitting around, and planning on taking 14 weeks non-paid mat leave later this year too, so hopefully we can get it done into the 70's!

54% of net. It goes into VTSAX and VBFMX. I keep an emergency fund of $10,000 in cash locally. Some might say "Facepunch", but I want to make sure I'm ready to fund a new heating/cooling system if necessary. (More worried about heating: My furnace is very old, and it is January in a cold climate.)

My 2014 savings rate goal is 66%, based on net income.  This will be my first full year of tracking, so I'll see how reasonable this goal becomes as the months pass by.

Got to about 70% this year.  Aiming for 50% this year.  I plan on potentially being 'unemployed' for a few months.  Additionally, moving jobs might have some immediate expenses involved, and I plan on getting my own apartment which will increase expenses by about 10% over last year.

Well this last month had some up and downs for us.  On one hand our income was unusually high due to my bonus but on the other hand our spending was unusually high as well.  We had about 1,700.00 in spending that is not our monthly norm.  This include airline tickets for a summer vacation, a set up hardly used rims/studded tires for a car, a early cancellation fee for a gym membership that we hardly used, and some higher than normal grocery spending.  After all that we were still able to but a decent chunk towards investments but I'm ready for a new month....

Miserably lousy in January, because of some irregular expenses:

1.  Daughter's braces phase II - but I got a 5% discount for payment in full and this should be the last orthodontist payment ever, and I have money set aside in the FSA account.
2.  Son's spring semester college expenses - but I have savings set aside and he's got a full ride scholarship which covers everything except some miscellaneous stuff.

February should be a lot better as I expect to receive a bonus and exercise some options next week, and that income after taxes will go straight into savings.

65%.

I have 4.5% of my paycheck taken out each week towards my student loans (HECS), and 5% (after tax) towards my retirement account (Super), which I don't count towards the 65%.

Just reviewed 2013. Our savings rate was 62%.  I am blown away - had no idea it was that high. We had some unusual circumstances (small inheritance went straight to savings) which added to our income/savings, so I'm not sure we can match that or beat it for 2014, but I'd sure like to try.

50% or better is a great standard when you are working towards extreme early retirement. But as a percentage, it actually says very little about your overall frugality in terms of what you make and what you spend. It also doesn't explain how you calculated it.
The standard formula is to call whatever your paycheck reads as net. This is faulty since it doesn't account for 401K savings, company matches, medical insurance, allowances for tax purposes, or any tax returns and investment income. Strictly by this standard formula, our savings rate would only be around 15% this year.
By my calculations, our gross savings rate is 35-50% and net savings rate is 30-40% using different methods.  We should make about $50-53K gross in 2014(with and without 401K company match). And since hubby works a lot of overtime(factory orders), it's almost impossible to take a guess this early. We could end up anywhere from 20% to 60% savings.
I focus on our budget instead. With medical insurance, vacation and everything else, our budget for 2014 is $34K. Everything else is savings determined by income and how much comes out of the unpredictable categories, like home repairs and medical payments. We have to take two kids to the orthodontist this year so that's probably gonna hurt our %. :P But it should be at least 33%.
~Just wanted to add that to achieve a 50% net savings rate using the standard formula, we'd have to spend .74 of the poverty rate for our family of five. If our house was paid for and if we reduced the extra contribution to the 401K, it would be pretty close to 50% net savings. Mortgage interest is 13% of our net income.~

I was about to respond and say you people are all freaking crazy to save that much but then did the calculations and I saved 55% of net last year. part of that is because I got 35% of my pay in one bonus check on December 31st, so not really giving me much time to spend it. That said, if I stay at this job, I don't see why I couldn't also save about 55% net this year.

I'm in. I'm also shooting for 50%.

2013 I finished at a disappointing 34% of my take home pay. Although this does not include 5% of 401K contributions, 3% to fund a defined benefit pension plan, and a large tax return I should receive.

I'm still at the peach fuzz stage of my stache. I just graduated college last Spring and had a lot of start up costs involved in moving into my own place, getting a business appropriate wardrobe, etc. And for the first few paychecks, I found myself falling into the working man's trap of, "I've worked hard and have a large paycheck; I should go buy myself something nice."

I believe there is room for improvement. 34% was me living carefree. I developed an expensive dining out habit to the tune of $150-200 a month and spent a lot on travel.

I am hoping to offset the travel expense by playing the credit card sign up bonus game (already have $500 from the MMM recommended Chase Sapphire Preferred) as well as frequent flier miles I've gathered from work related travel. General frugality and actually being conscious of my spending will hopefully get me to the 50% mark.

I'm hoping for 50%

2013 I was a few hundred dollars away from this goal and this year I'm moved to a new place and will get married so it might be tough. I should be earning a bit more money this year and for at least half the year my gf and I wii live together so I really want to set a good pace. Combined we probably only make like $50,000 so we have to be careful.

Reducing debt is increasing your net worth.  I include the principle portion of my payment as a part of my savings, and I think a lot of other people do as well.

Looking at saving 49% of gross income. Net wouldn't do me much good as a large portion of my savings are pretax and lowering the tax bill is part of our financial goals.
