1k pullups in September
« on: August 30, 2015, 07:43:21 PM »
I figured I'd start my own challenge. I'm not big on the three big lifts, but I sure do love me some pullups. Who else wants to join?

I'm in! I usually do about 50 pullups a week, all in one day. Going to try to do them 3x-4x a week this month. Thanks for the idea!

Pull ups or chin ups?
I can do about one pull up in a set. I can do about 3 chin ups.
I guess my point is that I'd like to particpate, but I'll have to set my goal well south of 1000.

My plan is for pullups. You can try assisted pullups or negatives to give yourself some extra room to progress.

I'm in!!

I was doing a lot a few years ago when I was losing weight. I went from being able to do 0 (chin-ups, not pull-ups) to being able to do 9 in a row. My goal was 10, but I messed up my upper back/neck and had to stop. I never picked it back up again (my neck is still screwy sometimes).

My pull up bar has been sitting neglected in the doorway for years and I've started to gain a little weight again. Last week I tried to see if I could still do 1 (I can!). But I wouldn't have been able to do 2 in a row.

This is just the type of challenge I need. :D

I will have to start slow at the beginning and just do a couple at a time, but I'm going to work my way back up to at least 5 in a row. I have a hard time knowing how far to push myself. I know I need to push myself to improve, but I don't want to push myself to injury again. However, that's a bad excuse for quitting completely!

i went the opposite way.

i'm trying to get more definition in my legs, particularly thighs and calves; so i'm steadily increasing the one legged calf raise and squats; hopefully working up to at least 100 squats every few days and 100 calf raises every couple of days.

already seeing better calf definition; but thighs is going to take some time; and a lot of potassium to keep the cramps down.

I'd be down for a squat challenge.

I'll post here to follow your progress and cheer you on.

And while I'm at it I'll shoot for 300 Pull-ups for September. Only doing sets of 2 right now so just getting 10 a day will be a challenge for me. Hopefully get up to sets of 5 or more by month's end.

I'm in!  I haven't been doing many pull ups recently and 500 seems like a more reasonable target for me, but I'll shoot for 1000.

thanks for the challenge!

I think I can do 1 pullup, but I currently don't own a pull up bar.  I've been thinking about getting one for about two years, and since it'll fit in our budget this month I'm going to go ahead and order one.  I have extremely poor upper body strength and it's time to start working on that.

I'm going to attempt 1k pushups this month (I average about 50 a month), and start working on pullups on a daily basis as well.

Good luck to everyone who actually has a reasonable chance of doing 1k pullups in a month!

9/8 Update:

Yeah, so my inability to do even one pull up was confirmed on Friday night when I installed the pull up bar.  I'm starting with 'reverse' pull ups and trying to slowly lower myself from the top to the bottom over 20-25 seconds.  I'm hoping this will build my strength faster than simply hanging from the bar and being unable to budge more than an inch or two.  This month will be about losing some weight and building up a bit of strength.  Again, good work to everyone out there who hasn't let their body waste away to the point I have.  It's fun to see your progress and high pull up counts.

Haven't done a pull up in about 18 months. Tried this morning, and managed three chin ups. I'll try this with neutral grip pull ups - need that bicep assist. Doubt if 1000 is realistic for me in September, but will let that stand. Might get there in Oct. or Nov.

wow- 1000 pullups in a month- that's quite a challenge!  I've been working on pullups recently, so I'll join and track how many I do in my routine, but I'm gonna guess I'll fall quite a bit short.  If you can hit the 1000 that's pretty badass.

Ya. Pretty sure I'm going to fall short too. I only managed 10 yesterday and my arms were burning. I've lost more upper body strength than I realized. Still going to try though. Can only get better from here. :)

So far so good! Here are the results:

1. 37
2. 85
3. 0
Total: 122
Target: 100

Yesterday was back day, so I had an easy way to get in some extra reps. The hard part isn't doing the reps, it's finding the time and energy to do that many sets on top of a normal work out. I think I have a good routine started though. I have been coming in the gym after I come home from work, doing 20 minutes of cardio, a few sets of pullups, and a bit of abs. After that, I'll wait until my boyfriend gets home and then we do our normal workout. I'm going to drop the pullups and maybe abs every third day.

I'm still trying to figure out of 1k is too low of a target, and the best way to split up the sets. I may add 10lb to make it more challenging.

Fuck it, I'll get on this one.
I have an old lingering elbow injury so I may cheat a little, but I'll hit a few sets today and see where it goes from here.

if it is tennis elbow, I've found that pullups exacerbate them.  Chin-ups or neutral grip pullups are a bit better because they don't torque your elbow as much.

And if tennis elbow does flare up get one of these, it worked wonders for me to prevent or mitigate the tennis elbow pain (when it hadn't gotten too bad).

Oh, and I've done 50/50/10 so far in my 3 days of the month.  I just crank out a set of 5-7 when I think of it.

Day 2 - 11
Day 3 - so far just 2. I really need to find a place where I can do them at work!

I'm in!  I've been focusing on squats and heavy lifts but have plateaued- perhaps a 1000 pull ups will help. I don't weight much so I'm aiming for high reps per set
 Sept 3rd- 52 (4 sets)
 Sept 4th - 61 (5 sets)

Umm, yeah, I'm confident that 1,000 isn't going to happen. This month. :-(

Day 1: 19
Day 2: Nil (DOMS is a bugger.)
Day 3: 35 A bit surprised I got this many in. Lats are a bit sore/tender, pretty sure I'm due for another bout of DOMS tomorrow.

<looks around> Where's my bottle of Tylenol?

After week 1, I'm ahead of the pace (33.3/day or 233.3 total)
Week 1 (7 days): 50 / 50 / 45 / 35 / 45 / 5 / 52  Total 282, Avg: 40.3
(Rested on Day 6)

I pretty much did sets of 5 scattered throughout the day whenever I passed by my pullup bar.  This is significantly more than I normally do (though lower numbers per set) so I've got a low level of background soreness but seems sustainable.  Also on day 2-3 I had a bit of a stiff neck that went away.

Late to the party, but I'm in starting.... Now!!  We have a pull up bar in our office.  I usually do about 60-80 in sets of 10 every Thursday (Back/Bicep day).

I just did 10.  990 to go!

Up to 335 now- + able to do a 20 rep set now - after a day of rest.
Not really on track given that the month is half over - better start doing more

The last month has been pretty crazy. I'm still on target though, 840 down. Instead of adding weight, I've just tried to get them all back to back in as few sets as possible. That gives me a good challenge.

seriously?!?  is that even possible?  I'd be interested to hear more about your pullup regimen.

My total for September is 1090!  or an average of 36 per day.
I also took 3 days off entirely for a backpacking trip.

My daily and weekly totals:
week 1: 50 / 50 / 45 / 35 / 45 / 5 / 52   >  282
week 2: 50 / 57 / 55 / 55 / 35 / 35 / 35  > 322
week 3: 35 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 10 / 12 / 50         > 107
week 4: 49 / 30 / 60 / 45 / 40 / 22 / 63   > 309
week 5: 40 / 30                                      > 70

thanks for the fun challenge!  I'm going to try to do 2000 more by the end of the year (~666/month)

Now I have to figure out what to do this month. Ended up at 1017 total. I could have pushed harder at the end, but instead coasted to 1k.
