ACA and adult children and taxes
« on: April 01, 2022, 10:41:20 AM »
Does anyone have any tips on how to calculate pros and cons of having my adult child on my ACA bronze plan?

With $80,000 of income for a family of four I’m getting a complete subsidy and paying zero premium. But if child has income we are not clear on whether child needs to pay own income tax returns (they are also a self-taught student and income is very low ) and then whether that affects whether we can claim child in our family of four. Child lives with us and we pay for food and everything else lol. Also if I make too little then I will be put on the state Medicare Program so obviously there’s a sweet spot. How do I figure out what that is with the moving part of an adult child with unpredictable  income?

Is the adult child still your dependent for tax purposes? If so they're counted as part of your household for ACA subsidy purposes. If not, they're counted as a separate household for this purpose. In that case you would need to split up the premiums between your independent kid and the rest of your family, and the subsidies would be calculated separately for each household unit.

Yes, still are dependent, though I guess I need to double-check what that entails. Certainly going through my tax software they seem to still qualify as a dependent.

Here's a questionnaire to help determine whether you can/should claim them as a dependent. Here's what to include in income for ACA purposes and whose income to include.

If your "adult" child earns $4300 for the year, you can't claim them as a dependent.  Asinine.  So full time college students for whom you are providing 100% support aren't dependents if they earn $83/week from a part time job.  This is the case for me in case ya couldn't tell.

That limit applies to "qualifying relative" dependents. If they're a student under 24 they can still be a "qualifying child" dependent which only requires that they provide less than half their own support as far as income is concerned.

Why can't the adult child go on Medicaid apart from your household?  It is comprehensive coverage.
