TurboTax Deluxe vs Home & Business
« on: December 14, 2024, 12:05:40 PM »
I understand all desktop versions of the software contain all forms. The only difference is how much hand-holding the software provides in the interview. So, if I have Schedule C income and expenses, including asset depreciation and a home office, which version should I use?

I know which version Intuit would like me to use -- the more expensive one -- but what should a tax savvy mustachian do?

I'd like to learn about the specific differences between these products, not just vague marketing statements like "designed for self-employed" and "maximize your small business deductions."

No one's replied so...

TT Deluxe easily handles rental property, stock sales, self employed income, and ACA subsidies. You can specify a home office and asset deprecation and deduct health insurance premiums from your SE income. It doesn't walk through 1256 contracts (futures trading) but that form is very easy, at least for my purposes.

I don't know what the more expensive versions will give you because I only use Deluxe. As far as I know, there's nothing missing.

I don't run my own business, but I did start receiving investment K-1 forms this year.  I switched from TurboTax Deluxe to TurboTax Premier to ease my fears of going DIY with more complex taxes.  According to TurboTax, buyers of the CD / Download version don't need Premier, but online users do.

If you're wary of paying more, you can defer the upgrade until you need it.

"Yes, you can upgrade your version of TurboTax and only pay the difference.  Your information will transfer to the Premier version once you upgrade."

Update! To confirm what bacchi said, I'm using TT Deluxe desktop as we speak, and it really includes everything needed for preparing a Schedule C: home office, asset depreciation, vehicle expenses, all of it. I see no reason to upgrade.

As an aside, I just purchased TurboTax Premier for $65, where I usually pay $84.  I think various versions of TurboTax are cheaper right now, and will be more expensive by the time everyone needs tax software.
