Selling shares to fund down payment
« on: March 20, 2023, 01:43:27 PM »
So, I'm under contract on buying my first house (yaaay!). Putting 20% down on a $450k house, so after closing costs and everything else, I will need to come up with ~$110k in cash. I've been saving up some cash for a down payment, so I've got $50k squirreled away ready to go.

So I need to offload around $60k in VTSAX/VTIAX. I see Vanguard offers a few cost-basis methods when selling shares. My hunch here is to go with their "Minimum Tax" option. Is there a good reason to use a different strategy?

If you must sell shares now, "minimum tax" is the way to go.
