tIRA space calculation
« on: January 23, 2017, 06:07:26 PM »
I'm trying to calculate how much tIRA space that I have left to use in opening a tIRA before April. I contributed $4,410 to a Roth in 2016 which would leave me $1,090 for a tIRA. Looking back at 2015 and 2014 however I noticed that I contributed $4,490 and $3,123 respectively to a Roth. I was wondering if it is possible for the pre April 15th contribution in 2014 to be considered as for 2013 and likewise the pre April 15th contribution in 2015 to be considered as for 2014 there by freeing up additional space for me to contribute to a tIRA before April for the 2016 tax year. Is this possible? Does anyone have experience with doing this? If it is possible, what documentation would I have to do for it? Thanks in advance for your help!

I've always declared the year at the time I send the money to Vanguard

That makes sense. All of my contributions have been automatic direct deposits so would it be safe to assume that the default declaration is that they are for the year in which they were deposited?
