Tax Software Discounts?
« on: October 31, 2021, 03:25:19 AM »
Amazon is showing TurboTax software arriving this week.  My sales of investments (1099-B) is going to be ridiculously long, and TurboTax has a long list of brokers they support for 1099 forms.

Does TurboTax or Amazon lower the price at any time between now and April?
And if so, when?  I'm wondering when I should buy their Premier version, which appears to cost $90 right now.

(Unfortunately TaxAct has a much shorter 1099 import support list that doesn't include Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab or Interactive Brokers).
(I had H&R Block for the past couple years, and I got tired of something they screwed up twice, then waited until March to fix... twice.  Not good quality control to repeat the same mistake)

I appreciate the reply, but I avoid visiting Bogleheads.

Ok, then to summarize, around Christmas Amazon often runs a sale, maybe also around black friday/cyber monday (a camelcamelcamel alert might be a good idea). Costco also often runs a sale around Christmas. Sometimes you can get a free copy through Fidelity, possibly more likely if you have more money with them.

The price for TurboTax Premier dropped 22% since I started this thread, from $90 to $70.  I'd like to use 2021 tax software to get an accurate estimate of my AGI.  What kind of discount is typical for Cyber Monday?

I had staggering investment returns this year which are putting me in a tax bracket where donating makes sense (what I like to call "IRS matching").  But I need to know my AGI before the year ends, so that I can donate ETFs equal to 30% of my AGI, and cash up to 50%, all into a Donor Advised Fund.  Correct me if I got the numbers wrong - I want to avoid spillover to next year in a much lower bracket.

I finally went to Bogleheads and other places to find estimates of Cyber Monday deals.  Last year it was apparently $20 off - the same discount that exists now.  So I've gone ahead and bought TurboTax Premier for $70.

According to turbotax.com, TurboTax Premier has the following features:
"Covers stocks, bonds, ESPPs, and other investments"
"Auto import of investment income"

But it's cripple-ware right now!  The stocks and investments section is not ready yet, and doesn't allow entering any information related to schedule D.  That spoils my plan to use it for tax planning before year's end.
