Pursue Mega Backdoor Roth?
« on: May 21, 2020, 08:03:03 PM »
Hello All,

I am seeking a bit of advice after reading a recent post from a reader/poster who was able to begin making after-tax contributions through his employer's 401(k) program.

Our Current Trajectory for 2020:
Gross Income: 130k
Annual Spending: 45k total
403b Contributions: 19.5 k ea. / 39k total
Traditional IRA: 6k ea / 12k total
Taxes: 6k
Remaining After Tax Income (currently set aside for taxable investments...but *could* be used for after tax (or Mega Backdoor Roth) contributions through employer): 28K

*Considering the above information, would it make more sense for us to contribute our After Tax Income through our employer's 403(b) plan and then roll it over periodically (2 or 3x per year) into Roth IRA accounts?

Any considerations to be aware of?  Reasons for/against?

I would be grateful for any advice or input from folks who might have done this or thought about doing it but decided not to.

Thanks all for your time.

I would definitely contribute to a mega backdoor Roth before taxable. I convert every month, but it's an in plan conversion, not rolled out to an IRA, so it just requires a simple call to the custodian. Some plans even allow an even simpler automatic conversion.

Mega-back door Roths are great. I'd just suggest maybe look at your projected household cash flows over the next few years and make sure you're comfortable pushing all that money into the mega back door Roth. You didn't say what your cash fund currently is and do you have big life expenses coming up soon. The pandemic has made me grateful to have a big stash of liquid cash.
