Missing data when importing an amended return with TurboTax
« on: March 25, 2017, 06:31:43 PM »
Question about how TurboTax imports data from last year's tax return, when having filed an amended return the prior year.

1) I am working on my 2016 return and as far as I could tell based on internet searches about this first issue, the correct approach is to start a new tax return by importing last years 2015 amended return (assuming one was filed) rather than the original return filed for April 15. That makes logical sense but when reviewing my 2016 return I see that it did not correctly import the "Amount paid with 2015 state income tax return", which is on line 5 of the State and Local Tax Deduction Worksheet (not to be confused with line 5 of Schedule A, where this item gets rolled up after further calculations). Instead of combining the amount paid in both state returns, it only reports (remembered) the amount paid with the amended return.

2) Which leads to the more broad question; are there other items that may not be getting imported correctly? Like tax credits or capital gain loses which can get limited in one year to be carried forward years into the future yet get forgotten by TurboTax software if there is ever an amended return filed?
