Medical Expenses Deduction w HSA
« on: February 11, 2019, 03:12:03 PM »
We had a high $$$ of medical expenses in 2018 due to birth of a child. We have a HDHP w HSA and have been paying all expenses with after-tax dollars to build the HSA, saving receipts to be reimbursed in future years. My question is, is there anything to prohibit us from taking the medical expense deduction? I've searched and searched but can't find any articles on the topic.

Any qualified medical expenses you paid with after-tax dollars can go into the itemized medical expense calculation.  You'll have to subtract 7.5% of your AGI from those expenses to get the deductible amount.

Money that you contributed to an HSA has no impact (other than lowering your AGI) on your itemizable medical expense.  Any expense paid with money withdrawn from the HSA could not be counted for itemization.
