Making money in two countries at once... where to pay taxes?
« on: April 30, 2018, 09:21:06 PM »
Hello all,

I am currently an English teacher in Japan, and have been living here for four years or so.  Right now the only money I have coming in is from my Japanese company, and it goes straight into my Japanese bank account. I pay Japanese income tax.

Recently I have been rather free, so I thought I might pick up some online teaching work to help pay off my student loans. I would get the money through my pay-pal account, which is connected to my bank account back home (Canada).

My question is... if the money from this online job does not at any point come into Japan, do I still pay Japanese income tax on it?  (Since I am a full time resident of Japan)
Or do I only pay Canadian income tax on that money, as it is going straight into my Canadian bank account.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Don’t know how it works as a Japanese resident, but we pay Canadian income tax on our Canadian income.

We declared non-residency for income tax purposes so that we don’t have to pay Canadian income tax for foreign earned income, otherwise we would have been taxed on the same income both in China and in Canada.

I guess you’ll have to check the Japanese tax laws since you’re a Japanese resident to determine whether they have a tax treaty with Canada.
