A question about FreeTaxUSA
« on: February 05, 2025, 08:41:12 AM »
I think this is the year I'm going to ditch H&RBlock for my taxes. Based on a recommendation I saw somewhere on this forum, I'm going with FreeTaxUSA. I have one question, though. My state, last I checked, did not allow e-filing if your name has a suffix (Jr, Sr, III, etc.). Can I e-file the federal taxes in FreeTaxUSA and then print out the state ones to file on paper? I don't mind paying the $15 state fee.

Yes, you should be able to select the mail filing option and send your tax return via mail.

Yes, it lets you handle the Federal and State tax filings separately/differently if desired.

I've continued to use H&R Block for many years even though I've heard about the FreeTaxUSA option. I took a look at the site and it seems like it covers a wide variety of scenarios - is there anything it doesn't cover that I should be aware of before switching?

It's pretty comprehensive for personal tax returns. If you have unusually complicated tax returns or business taxes (S-corp for example), you might be better off going with a CPA. But for most personal taxes it should work fine.

I've only ever used a CPA when I had a business (LLC) with a partner. Currently my taxes are much more straight forward then in years past when I was freelance and had a couple rental properties. So, if I was able to do those with H&R, it sounds like I could certainly use FTUSA with my current situation. Thanks for your input.
