How to get an Annual I-Bond statement?
« on: March 14, 2023, 09:02:14 AM »
For reasons, I'm going to report annual interest for our I-bond holdings, rather than waiting until I cash them out.  I know I don't get 1099's for I-bonds, but I can't find any sort of annual statement at all.  Do these exist?  And, if so, can you point me towards them?  And if they don't exist, what is the best way to determine the annual interest "paid"?  Thanks!

I submitted a question via Treasury Direct, but got an email back telling me (politely) that they're busy and likely won't respond.

The instructions are above. Just go to treasurydirect and look at the interest during the year (i.e. the value of the bond at the the end of the year minus the value at the start).

Right, this is what it says there: "If the savings bonds are in a TreasuryDirect account, you can see the interest earned each year in the account."

I can't find where I can see this, though.  I can see the value today, but I can't see anything that shows the end of the year value.

Yeah, that's lame. I couldn't find the per year breakdown either. It looks like you have to calculate the per year interest yourself by finding the date the bond was issued and then use this https://www.treasurydirect.gov/files/savings-bonds/i-bond-rate-chart.pdf to find the rate and then multiply it yourself, remembering to compound it semi-annually and then subtract off the interest penalty if you've held it for less than 5 years...

The joys of TreasuryDirect.

If you're going to do this next year too you probably want to make note of the value today so you can easily find the interest in the next year by simple subtraction.

Interesting, thanks!  I actually have quarterly values (including a Jan 1 value) so I can do this pretty easily.  I was just hoping to have some sort of statement that I could stick in my virtual file just in case anyone asks for proof.  I'm doing this because I'm a US citizen and Canadian permanent resident and I need to report these to the CRA (Canada's IRS) and I want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row.  Thanks for your help!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
