Free Tax Software if you have HSA
« on: March 11, 2016, 06:08:43 PM »
Previous years I have used the free version of Tax Act to do my taxes however 2015 was the first year I had an HSA account and I need to fill out a Form 8889. Unfortunately with Tax Act it requires me to upgrade to Tax Act Plus which is $29.99 in order to do that. Is there free tax software out there I could use that would allow me to be able to fill out a Form 8889 or am I going to have to bite the bullet and buy tax software. My taxes are pretty straightforward. W2 income, Interest and Dividend Income, itemized deductions which I already know. I have not sold any stocks during the year.

I thought we were going to have to pay, but I checked the IRS free file (google it) and found AGI up to a little over $60k this year qualifies, so I ended up using TaxAct for free anyway. You have to go in throug the free file page, but then you can sign in to your old account and transfer data from last year. Only works if your income is low enough, of course, but it's after you subtract 401K and HSA contributions.

www.freetaxusa.com/ is free for the Federal return including all the forms. It's the only free software I could find that included schedules A, C, and D (including all the extra forms).

They have some weird extras they try to sell you on (faster support, "free amendments" by paying up front), but if you just say no to all of them it stays free.

Thanks DHC that site looks pretty good.

Rural, my AGI is above $62K so cannot use the IRS site.
