Free file for high earners (US)
« on: February 19, 2021, 06:07:54 AM »
Just an fyi, for those with incomes too high to use the usual free file program, there is an alternative offered by the United Way through https://www.myfreetaxes.com (I'm not affiliated in any way).

You need to select "By Myself" and sign up to receive marketing emails from the UW, but you'll get a link to Taxslayer. I found it nearly painless even though it is supposed to be "unguided". I had W2 income, itemized deductions, long/short-term capital gains, backdoor roth, dividends, so ymmv. The only issue I had was getting Form 8606 to populate properly, which took a few tries.

I checked it out.  My quick review:

The following seem to be missing/not supported/impossible to find:
Schedule K-1 (1065) Box 11C
Schedule K-1 (1065) Box 13W
1099-DIV Box 8

Here are some actual functional problems I noticed in a quick survey:

1099-R Codes J,P from a Return of Contribution for the prior year incorrectly enters the amount as taxable in the present year.
1099-R Code 2 from the rollover of an after-tax IRA (backdoor Roth) enters the distribution amount as entirely taxable.
In fairness, FreeTaxUSA and TaxAct both have major problems with 1099-R.

Thanks for the tip! I've already entered most of my info into Free File Fillable Forms (they didn't have the form for computing the QBI deduction available yet when I started last week), otherwise I'd give this a try. I've used TaxSlayer as a VITA volunteer so I'm pretty familiar with it already. Will keep this in mind for next year though.

Form 8995 is now available on FFFF.  They plan to have all forms available by Feb 25.

Yay! Will likely submit today. I earned too much in 2019 to get the stimulus checks right away, and I'm expecting a pretty hefty refund. Should be enough to pay my property tax for the year.

For what it's worth, l've received my (correct) refunds from both the IRS and my state, so I have no complaints about this software. I will not be surprised if I get letters a few months from now alleging I made mistakes/owe repayments, but that's only because it's happened the last few years without fail (when I used an accountant).
