Form from City/county re property taxes paid?
« on: February 01, 2016, 08:42:03 PM »
This may be a dumb question, but does the city/county send you a tax form indicating how much you paid in property taxes in a calendar year, or do you have to have your own records?

I live in a very large urban county in Texas, and they do not send forms for what you paid. I escrow, however, so I receive duplicate bills showing what is owed most of the time (I'll see two out of three most years).

I usually just log into my bank's website (that holds my mortgage) and look at the transaction data to both confirm it was paid on time (wasn't one year due to a glitch that meant all tax bills were sent in with zero dollars) and to see the exact dollar amounts for my records.

I can also go to the county tax assessor's website and pull the individual tax records myself if I really wanted. I did so when the escrow account got borked that one time and resubmitted to my mortgage company to show what they should have paid.

I don't get a form from the county. The payment shows up on my bank statement and I can look up the number on the county website for the past three years at least.

For property taxes, if it's being paid through an escrow account, then use what appears on the mortgage interest form.

If you pay directly, use that. Calendar year payments, regardless of which tax year.

I pay directly, no escrow, and do not get a form for tax purposes. When I pay, I make a copy of the stub and check and drop it into my tax folder for when I do my taxes.
