Estate Tax on US ETFs in RRSP?
« on: December 14, 2015, 06:21:46 PM »
I currently hold VTI and VXUS in my RRSP (USD) but I've recently stumbled on some information online about this potentially resulting in a US Estate Tax on my death.
Does anyone have any more information on this or any thoughts? Are the tax savings of using VTI and VXUS enough to warrant this estate tax?

I found some information here: http://www.taxtips.ca/personaltax/usestatetax.htm
That page and others I've found have all seemed bit vague and I've had a hard time figuring out if the estate laws apply in my situation.

Looking forward to some thought from those smarter than me ;)
Thanks!

Estate taxes are not paid for relatively small amounts. It's a complex system of tax scales and credits so it's a little confusing. Either way I wouldn't not worry about it unless you have an estate worth more than $6M USD. If so, things can easily be stretched further by gifting to charity etc.
