Entering zero in box 1 of a W2
« on: March 05, 2019, 09:15:02 AM »
I had a child in 2018, and DW was on short term disability. We got a W2 from the insurance company with the compensation listed as all non-taxable, and box 1 left blank.  Doing taxes on a few different software platforms don't let me enter a W2 with a zero in box 1.

Any workarounds, or anyone know of which software will allow you to do this?

You don't normally need to file taxes if you have zero income.  It's slightly more complicated if you have unearned income but not earned income, but in many cases you can just skip it.

So with zero in taxable income for that particular W2, i can just ignore it and not enter the W2 from the insurance company, and enter my W2 and DW's W2 from our regular 9-5 jobs? That would solve the problem.

Does it have any other boxes you can fill in? If so try that, otherwise I would say you could ignore it.

The amount that the insurance company paid to us is in box 14 coded as third party sick pay.

If this money doesn't count as income, you probably don't need to be reporting it on your tax return unless there's some benefit to doing so, such as some tax credit that it would allow you to claim. I'm not aware of one though.
