E-File rejected, stimulus question
« on: February 15, 2021, 02:18:45 AM »
This year's numbers are nearly identical to last year's, except my software (H&R block) thinks I should be receiving a $1900 refund instead of owing $250.  We received $2900 for the COVID stimulus last year which somehow translated into an $1800 credit on our taxes. Is this correct? My efile was rejected and the program won't say why. I ran the exact same numbers through TurboTax and it thinks I should be receiving the same refund, but less $5.  TT prompted me whether I received a second $1800 check. I have not.  Could there be a check in the mail heading my way that is throwing off H&R Block's software?

Are you filing MFJ and have one dependent under the age of 17 on your 2018, 2019 and 2020 tax return?

If you received the first stimulus payment last summer but did not receive a second stimulus payment in December/January, then you probably won't ever receive the second stimulus payment and should receive it via an additional refund amount on your tax return.  This is the most likely scenario based on what you describe.

Probably the best way to go about it is to carefully review the questions and answers on the Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet, which both H&R Block and TT should let you look at somehow.  You might be due the additional amount, or  you might have answered one of the questions incorrectly somewhere.

Grrr. And this is what happens when it takes 6 weeks to get your mail. That second check arrived today. Guess it's a good thing my return was rejected. The system still won't let me E-File so it's to the post office for me.
