Delayed Availability for 1099-Forms. Need Estimate 2023 Div/Int
« on: January 27, 2024, 08:45:26 AM »
Can someone tell me how close my Int/Div will be for 2023 with the following info from Vanguard?  I'm trying to keep my AGI for 2024 low enough to claim a tax credit so I'm avoiding OT this year until I can get an estimate of this years Int/Div. I've included screen shots of my year-to-date activity and I don't fully understand why there would be any changes to the values listed. Am I correct to believe these numbers for 2023 are correct?

The reason forms are not available are shown the Tax Forms link on Vanguard's website.

Your Consolidated Form 1099 is still being prepared.

To provide you with an accurate tax information package, Vanguard needs to receive all relevant tax information (such as Return of Capital data) before finalizing your form. Certain accounts with complex securities (such as non-Vanguard investments) take longer to finalize. If you are signed up for e-delivery, we’ll email you when the form is ready for download.

If I'm understanding you correctly I wouldn't count on 2023 dividends being a good enough predictor of 2024 dividends to make accurate predictions unless you leave a decent amount of breathing room.

I guess I'll see how a couple of quarters go and hopefully get a better idea then. Thanks

Just go into your account and look at the Dividends paid during 2023.  It should match what will eventually be on the tax form.

You will get a better estimate by tracking the amount you have in each fund, and using the dividend % from the prior year, rather than using the dividend $, for your future estimates. For example, you have 100 shares, and last year your dividends were $100, but the price has doubled since then, you'll have significantly more dividends this year.

https://stockanalysis.com/etf/voo/dividend/ says it's roughtly a 1.42% yield, so if your shares were worth $100 on mar 1, $150 on jun 1, $100 on sep 1, and $200 on dec 1, you might expect $7.81 in dividends (550 / 4 * 0.0142). I break mine down by quarter, to make them more accurate, and have been pretty good for me. Using last year's number is not accurate.

Which credit?  In other words, is it one with a cliff (e.g., the maximum investment income for the Earned Income Tax Credit) or one that phases out gradually?
