Deducting mileage question
« on: October 23, 2015, 01:48:04 PM »
My girlfriend travels a lot for her business (travelling dog show photographer).

Recently, she had a gig 200 miles away for a week.  Normally, she would simply drive there, do her thing, drive back, and deduct the 400 miles.

But one of our cars was out of commission at the time (I have since gotten it back on the road), so instead I dropped her off, drove home, and then came back a week later to pick her up.

Would she still only deduct 400 miles, or would she be able to deduct the 800 actual vehicle miles driven in this situation?

In the simplest terms possible, 400 is business related, and 400 is personal. A business can't deduct personal expenses.

She could have rented a car and drove the 400 miles and wrote off the cost of the rental.

Yep. She could fly and deduct the cost of the ticket. But she can't deduct the mileage for her husband driving their car home.
