Changing IRA contribution to Roth at Vanguard
« on: February 23, 2017, 06:41:22 AM »
I was just reassessing my tax withholdings based on this year's pay and bonus increases and realized that I won't be able to deduct any of my IRA contributions this year.  Unfortunately, I've already made my full contribution to my tIRA.  How big of a PITA is it to move a contribution from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA?  I have both accounts at Vanguard. Is this going to be a huge hassle come tax time this year?  Would the hassle of converting it be worth the tax free earning on $5500 or should I just leave it as is this year and go for the Roth moving forward?

It isn't that hard.  I don't believe you'll be able to recharacterize online.  But if you call them, they will get it done in short order.

I had to recharacterize a traditional->Roth conversion about a month ago.  One phone call.... he did a little number crunching and called me back 15 minutes later and it was done.

Yeah, I've done this at Vanguard a couple times. There's a recharacterization kit online. I called them and the customer service rep walked me through it (what numbers to put where, what I could leave blank, etc.). It's pretty easy.
