Missing out on 2020 tax year Stimulus
« on: February 08, 2021, 08:28:16 AM »
All of my 1099 data might not be in for me to file taxes before the 2020 stimulus gets approved. I didn't qualify with my 2019 return but will easily qualify with my 2020 return. Any suggestions?

So why would it matter when you file your tax return? That’s because Congress is likely to tell the IRS to use 2019 or 2020 income—whichever the government has when the payment is made, according to the Senate Finance Committee.

File now anyway? You should have records and the 1099 ought to just confirm what you already know. Plus you could amend if that turns out to be necessary.

Sort of in the opposite boat - I think I won't qualify at the lower limit on 2019 or 2020 income, but I may qualify based on 2021. Hope they write it the same way so that I can get that credit a year from now if we do come in under $100K AGI (cutting back to 60% in a few months).

Looks like I will be doing my taxes today. Better brew up a pot of coffee.

Wow, I would have definitely assumed it would not matter in the end as you'd either have to pay it back/get a refund depending on what is the official year they end up going by, but guess everything I'm reading is saying its possible there may be no official year to go by?  Nice catch.

I doubt I'm eligible either way, but should be FIRE soon after so will be eligible for the 2022, 2023, and 2024 checks.

You might not need to file early. We did not qualify for the first round based on my pre-FIRE income from 2018. We had to file our 2019 taxes late because my 2019 K-1 was delayed by COVID. We did not file our taxes until late May 2020, well after everyone had received checks. But, we still received the first stimulus check after filing out taxes. So, maybe filing date won't matter.
