Fixed my Dyson
« on: January 14, 2017, 03:36:36 PM »
I worked out how to fix the catch on my Dyson with a £2.99 part when it had been held in with tape for ages...saves buying a new one, and I have discovered you can pretty much get spares for the whole hoover.  However minus points as I fully intended to take my bike to parkrun this morning, and even left the house and set off down the road with it, but it was far too icy for me, as I'm not an experienced cyclist, so I went back home and got the car. Next week I'll try again.

Great work with the Dyson.

We have the DC08 Telescope Wrap from 2005. I've replaced the head (dog chewed it), the motor (a pre-emptive move after re-rendering the inside of our bungalow. That dust is nasty!) and the on/off switch twice. Oh, and I bought a spare filter so I can wash and switch them out, plus a new post-motor filter (it was in a bad way after all that dust...). I love that the parts are so easy to buy, and that even though I'm not very skilled at this sort of thing (though I'm getting better), that it really was quite easy to make all of these fixes. I also pull it all apart and give it a nice service-clean from time to time. Except for some scratches on the surface it is like a new vacuum!

Great work on the repair.

Not sure it's the most mustachian of vacuums, but there's always room for improvement.

Great work on the repair.

Not sure it's the most mustachian of vacuums, but there's always room for improvement.

There are Mustachian ways to obtain one.

I bought my first second-hand for $150. After four years, it broke so I took it in to be fixed. They diagnosed a manufacturing fault and gave me 50 per cent off a new one. I combined the discount with birthday and Christmas money, and was out of pocket $150, this time for a brand new one.

Mustachians like to complain about companies that don't offer service or repair. This sometimes means paying slightly more for quality.

As JLR said, Dyson parts are very accessible, and their servicing is excellent. My mum had her 15-year-old Dyson serviced a couple of years ago and they basically rebuilt the entire machine - new motor, new hoses, new accessories - for less than $100.

This is all good information. I fixed my Bissell vacuum Saturday and I know I need to replace the part as this one wont last long. The part is $18 so not horrible but I noticed many of the parts are now unavailable so a new one is in my future. Unless something else happens the $18 part should get me buy for a couple more years anyway.

I also miss my roomba. I bought it for $80 10 yrs ago and the battery is toast. The new batteries are now $80 but a new roomba is more than that. My floors were sure cleaner when it worked. I could turn it on every morning while getting ready for work.

My wife gets pissed at me when our appliances break because she wants to replace them with new versions (yeah, she's not fully on board with mustachianism but she's generally supportive and I'm working on her.)

Our 15-20 yr. old Sharp Twin Energy vac (highly recommended by Consumer Reports at the time) has had a few minor issues: I've replaced the belt and the foot lever to lock the handle and I built a wooden cord-wrap thingy. It didn't help when our friend showed up at our garage sale a few years ago with a case of paper filter replacement bags. I think I paid her $0.50 for about 25 bags.

Fortunately she hates vacuuming, so that task falls to me and I kind of like it. Especially when using something I fixed.

We have fixed ours several times! We did buy it new in early 2008, though we were able to use a 20% off coupon at Bed, Bath, Beyond before they wised up and excluded it from the list (this was well, well before any sort of awareness of the concept of FIRE). Minor (and not so minor) things have gone wrong with it, but we've always been able to fix it for a very minor parts cost. Pretty happy to still have it going strong after 9 years!

I have an old Dyson from about... 2003 approximately. It still runs well, but it got dropped down the stairs a few times and the hose also got a hole in it. I bought a used one for $50 off craigslist and some other parts of E-bay. Now it is like a Frankenstein Dyson. The original one was purple and pink, and now it has grey, turquoise, and yellow parts on it. The motor just keeps running. I think I've gotten my $450 or so out of it over the past 14 or so years.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
