I saw an unused collapsible bike on Kiiji last year for $50.  I think they sell 'em at Walmart for under $200.  You can fold it up and easily take it on any public transportation.

Thank you! I'm pretty sure a lot of Mustachians riding their 10 mile commute to work on a bike are seen as nutty or idiotic (haven't you people heard of cars?!).  I'm sure this man knows about bikes, and cars, and moving closer, and finding a closer job, etc. etc.  He's made his life choice, and just because we wouldn't opt for it, doesn't make him an idiot.

Without my mortgage and car expenses, I'd easily be living on $10.50 per hour, full time; I imagine many people here can say the same.  I wouldn't have much room for savings/travel. I could certainly afford a bike. I might be able to afford to commute in a cheap car.

Why is this not pure badassity? Sure he could grab a bike and make it much easier and efficient but he is not using an unnecessary car.  He is getting good exercise; he is experiencing the outdoors. In many ways he is living an excellent life.

Well, he certainly would have a hard time believing that for most of the past 30 years, my husband and I didn't make more than $30k a year, raised 4 kids, lived in a nice neighborhood. During this time, there was usually one SAHP, and our net worth is 1 Mil +
and we retired 4 1/2  years ago at  age 46 & 50....and live off rental income.

So I stand by my previous statement...it isn't how much you make, but how much you save.
