I agree, why not ride a bike? or find a different job closer? I know there may be nothing available now, but in the last 10 years there have been no open positions closer to him? he spends 12 hrs a day commuting!

I'm sorry...but this isn't a normal person.

He makes plenty of money, and the g/f inherited the house.
Yes $10.55  is plenty...my adult children make this, and still have good sized bank account, and also paying off their own apt.

This man walks, instead of buying a bicycle, because he 'chooses' to.
Pure and simple.

Well, it seems to have worked out for him. They  just gifted him $280k from some type of crowd funding. Although... 280k over 10 years isn't the best ever.

I have no idea where someone could live where $10.55/hr would be "plenty".  I guess it might be okay if you lived at home with your parents and didn't pay any bills and never participated in any activities that require payment.

I read it as "man makes bad choices for over 10 years." In all that time he could not come up with a better solution?

2 hours of sleep at home at night, plus I guess whatever naptime he can get on the bus segments??? I can only assume he's not tasked with critical decision-making at his job.

Although, he could be mentally ill...

Whoa guys. I don't agree with the crowd funding, and his choices aren't the ones I'd make, but I wouldn't call him names over it. We're all human.

I saw an unused collapsible bike on Kiiji last year for $50.  I think they sell 'em at Walmart for under $200.  You can fold it up and easily take it on any public transportation.

Thank you! I'm pretty sure a lot of Mustachians riding their 10 mile commute to work on a bike are seen as nutty or idiotic (haven't you people heard of cars?!).  I'm sure this man knows about bikes, and cars, and moving closer, and finding a closer job, etc. etc.  He's made his life choice, and just because we wouldn't opt for it, doesn't make him an idiot.

Nova Scotia, Canada is where.
One young adult son, makes this wage, and has a years wages saved, paying off his one bedroom apt, no debt, and lives alone (with a cat)

We should all know, it isn't about how much you make, it is how much you save.

Without my mortgage and car expenses, I'd easily be living on $10.50 per hour, full time; I imagine many people here can say the same.  I wouldn't have much room for savings/travel. I could certainly afford a bike. I might be able to afford to commute in a cheap car.

I believe what MoneyCat is saying here is that your thinking that you can live well/buy a place etc. in Nova Scotia is so outlandish that he is comparing it to the fictional land of Narnia where Lions are gods and other crazy shit happens i.e. he is saying you live in fantasy land.

$10.50 an hour is about $21K per year isn't it?

Why is this not pure badassity? Sure he could grab a bike and make it much easier and efficient but he is not using an unnecessary car.  He is getting good exercise; he is experiencing the outdoors. In many ways he is living an excellent life.

The lack of sleep/time to do anything besides commute & work would cancel out any badassity for me.

$21k per year for 92.5 hours/week of working and commuting.  So $4.54 per hour pre-tax.  I think he could do better somewhere closer to home.

Ah...I see.
Well, he certainly would have a hard time believing that for most of the past 30 years, my husband and I didn't make more than $30k a year, raised 4 kids, lived in a nice neighborhood. During this time, there was usually one SAHP, and our net worth is 1 Mil +
and we retired 4 1/2  years ago at  age 46 & 50....and live off rental income.

So I stand by my previous statement...it isn't how much you make, but how much you save.
