My wife cracked her iphone 5 screen once by sitting down with it in her back pocket. I replaced the screen using instructions from iFixit (https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+5+Front+Panel+Replacement/10906) and a replacement screen from Amazon (http://amzn.to/2kCjAnp) (which came with tools for opening the iphone as well). She then proceeded to drop her phone in the bathroom with a tile floor again (a few months later) cracking the screen. Spent about $50 for two replacement screens and about 1 hours worth of time.
I have also replaced some batteries with reduced charge in iphones as well. They are pretty cheap ~$10-20 and super easy to replace. iFixit is a great source for instructions.

May I suggest investing in a case next?
Fixing phones/laptops/etc has been a quite profitable little niche for the effort I put in. Beer (or food) money for long periods of my life has come from fixing stuff on the side.

That's awesome! I attempted to replace my own battery, which involves pulling the screen, and messed up one of the flat cables, necessitating a screen replacement. Frugality fail on so many levels.

Yes I got her a more rugged case after the 2nd event. But it is satisfying being able to fix something like this.

two old iphones and an ipod touch that needs this done, still basically work though.
