We went on television again, preaching the Mustache Message!
« on: February 02, 2017, 07:51:27 PM »
We did a brief spot on the news last night (and this morning as well, according to our coworkers), giving a brief overview of sensible grocery shopping. They followed us around the grocery store while we did our weekly shopping, then headed back to our apartment to discuss what we bought and eat dinner. Check it out!

Wow! $230/mo is super impressive - I am feeling pretty good with $400-450 for the two of us (goal for this year is $400 average; last year was $465 avg). Do you eat meat at all?

Nope, strict vegans.

Were those potatoes you put in the refrigerator? Do they last longer that way?

Is that not normal?

In response to this, I'll say, I've NEVER stored potatoes in the fridge. I always store them in a dark, cool place. 5kg sacks at a time. My parents leave them in the garage. They will store well for a couple months easily and don't grow sprouts if kept away from water.

I don't have a dark, cool place - we have a tiny 400 square foot apartment, and keep it quite warm. Vancouver is also naturally kind of humid. When we've kept them anywhere except the fridge, we always have them sprout and go bad. It hasn't happened since we started keeping them in the fridge.

I keep my potatoes in the fridge too.  It's cool, it's dark.  And it keeps them away from pets or bugs or ...

It may be normal, but I had never heard of or ever seen anyone do it.

I do sometimes have trouble with the last of the sack going bad, so I will try the colder storage option and see how it works out. Less waste = free money.

This is very impressive.  Great work!

Do you guys have a set menu that you eat weekly/bi-weekly?

Congrats for being featured!   ...and even most of the comments are supportive, too.

..as for potatoes, I've always kept mine in the vegetable crisper... last for months.

We're not that organized, but it sounds cool! Our meals are completely dependent on what's on sale that week.

The only drawback of putting potatoes in the fridge is that the flesh goes a darker colour.  Fortunately I have a cold cellar.  But when I lived in a apartment, I used the fridge to stop them from going bad.  I wish you could have a third compartment in the fridge for not so cold storage.  I don't like the way some fruits go if in the fridge but hate having them go moldy so quickly in the summer.

Your grocery spending is awesome!

I believe they found us from a few articles we were featured in back in 2014 talking about early retirement and cheap housing in Vancouver. They contacted us on Facebook. Reporters also contact us through our blog sometimes - if you do google searches for things like "saving money on X in Vancouver", you'll tend to end up at our blog eventually.
