We moved to the country and ate a lot of peaches
« on: September 08, 2016, 06:11:31 PM »
Long story short: 3 months ago my family and I moved to the country away from Seattle. We joined Costco and thought... ok we might save money, but we also might drive a lot more to get said groceries.

Turns out at the 3 month mark here we've nearly halved our food costs and kept our gas usage the same! Woot! And our shopping habits took a dive too! There's room for improvement and I'm still learning all the cadences of living in the country, but it's a good start.

Thanks to the Priest for his inspiring post about cutting his grocery bill in half. He reminded me to make this comparison.

Very interesting. We don't use our Sam's membership nearly as much as we could/should. And we rarely do major grocery shopping there. Sounds like we need to rethink what we're doing.

For us, Costco is only a few minutes past the grocery store, so we do most of our shopping there.  Two of us, but we go through an absurd amount of vegetables per week.

Oh great.  Now I'm singing "Kitty" inside my head.  Not the same song, but on the same album.

Well done!

For us, Costco is actually closer than the grocery store, so luckily we like and eat a lot of what they sell. Also luckily, we don't mind eating the same thing repeatedly for a few days in a row. It means less shopping and less cooking, so that's a huge win!

I was wondering if I was the only one who knew the reference. :)

For us, Costco is actually closer than the grocery store...

Proximity is what was killing me while living in the city--I imagine I would have fared a lot better of Costco was right next door. I would choose grocery stores on my bus route to make it easy on myself. Now that I work from home I don't have this luxury any more and definitely no temptation for shopping.

My bad, Spork! :)
