Paid to Work Out
« on: August 24, 2015, 02:25:24 PM »
My company has a neat wellness program.  The incentives are getting better and better.  This year they are discounting our Health Insurance costs by $2 for every time we work out.   I usually work out 5-6 days a week anyways, so Im "earning" about $48/month!

You should be able to add $5/week from kmart and an extra dollar a month through walgreens. (I know, I know, a dollar a month, pffft, but if you're tracking the activity anyway and already stop in at walgreens occasionally, why not take the dollar?)

Glad to hear it, it's good for you, your fellow coworkers, and for the company as a whole. I wish more companies would incentive exercise.

For the company, I've heard that by encouraging employees to exercise they have lowered insurance premiums, less sick days, more productive and happy employees, and in all in all, more awesomeness!

Every time you substitute human power for gasoline . . . You get paid to work out.
Walk to work, bike to work or to the grocery store.

Your trasnportation cost savings equal a pretty good paycheque for working out.
I guesstimate I've been paid at least $20,000 to ride my bike in the past 3-4 years.
Makes biking even more fun.

5k/year. = $13.70/day

Even at $1/mile that's 13.7 miles/day.  I'm impressed.

How do they know how often you work out? Self reported honor system?

We get $200 back in reimbursements. We received it for this year (was at the YMCA) but cancelled our membership since my wife was'bnt going. I was able to get a great weight set, squat rack, and barbell for ~$700. So that'll pay for itself in ~8 months. On top of that I'm able to work out at home in the mornings. Finally, I'm planning on getting a drop in card at a crossfit gym and get reimbursed for that next year. That way I can get in a few really kick ass workouts when I have the time and I don't lose out on the $200 reimbursement.

first, if you don't already have a shopyourway account (kmart/sears loyalty card) you need to sign up for that. Then go here: https://www.fitstudio.com/welcome/earn_points to the kmart/sears fitness site to get enrolled in the points earning thing. It looks like just successfully getting enrolled earns you $5 (5000 points).

Walgreens is a way smaller award, but you need their loyalty card also, and I think once you're logged into your account on their website, you need to look for the phrase Balance Rewards for healthy choices.

Yes, there is a website where you report the date, type, and duration of workout.

Well my dollars saved amount was based on guesstimates. In 2014 I did ride 5000 kilometres (= 13.6 ish kilometres, not miles, per day. But we do have long winters here, so walking 8k per day--the short, shitty route to work--takes over for 3 months).
Not all of that biking was replacing car driving though. Some was just for fun!
Here are some real Canadian dollar savings numbers:

Parking at work not required: $2000/year. Can never believe people pay this, but . . .
Parking for downtown trips made on bike: say 25 x $10 = $250
Car insurance not required: $800
Gym membership not required: $800 (annual cost at my work gym, can't believe I did once pay it)
Ok, we're at $3850/year without any gas or tires or maintenance  yet . . . .

Thanks for the info!  Just signed up for the Walgreens reward program.
