Unknown Job Change
« on: May 09, 2013, 09:44:23 AM »
Background:

I've been at the same software company for quite a few years, but changed roles about a year and a half ago. The new role is awesome, except the boss thinks completely differently than I do, and expects me to think like he does, which means constant stress and claims that I'm not a "team player" because my words can occasionally be twisted to mean nearly the opposite of my intentions. However, I get along well with the other team members.

So... this Monday I was informed by my boss's superior that it isn't working out and I need to leave, but he made sure that I have two weeks paid finish my projects and to look for other opportunities within the company. This is generally just not done in the type of role I have, generally this type of news would come with the directions to pack a box and you'd be walked to your vehicle.

So, initially I was a little disappointed/annoyed at the situation, but over the last few days I've realized a few awesome details that I feel are good to share:

- When you have ample funds to live without a job for several months, even major life changes are far less stressful than you might expect.
- Dealing with a bad boss is simply not worth it. (I've been enjoying coming into work more this week than at any time in the last year)
- When you work hard and spend time learning instead of wasting time, you are abundantly prepared for a job search. (I already have two interviews lined up, one at the current company in a more interesting position, and a second at another nearby company where I would likely get paid more.)

Good for you!

What kind of learning have you been doing?

Good luck! A bad boss is definitely not worth it! I'm sorry you've been going through that.

Are you looking around for other positions at your company?

I'm finishing up a Master's degree (almost entirely paid by the company too) as well as general reading at home about finance, business, software development, etc.

At the moment my preferred option is at the same company, and is a position doing almost the same type of work, but on a totally different product.

Good luck to you! Hopefully this will be the start of something awesome! Never worth a bad boss and stress! I am impressed with your calm, positive attitude. And I think you are right about being prepared... you have prepared financially as well as professionally. Congrats!

I heard back today from the manager of the other team within the company, and while he was initially looking for someone with more proven experience, they were very happy with the interview last week, and they are interested in offering me a 90 day trial in the other position.

I haven't found out the details, but the other position is likely going to pay the same, be far more interesting, and the team that I interviewed with seems really fun to work with.

Nice to work for a company that doesn't just shut you out as the outcome of a bad fit personality-wise.

This is so true, I'm really happy with the company, and that's a big part of the reason I'm still interested in staying.
