Charity donation on credit card w/o fees
« on: January 26, 2021, 02:05:03 PM »
I decided to make a larger than ever for me donation to a charity.

I called the issuer of my credit card.   They said a charity donation will be charged a cash advance fee of 5%...

So...
I got a virtual credit card no. form PayPal,  They call it a PayPal Key.
I copied the  PayPal Key (PPK) #'s.
I went to the website of the charity and clicked 'Donate'.
I put in my info and amount.  I put in the PPK nos.
I put in my preference(s) for how the donation should be used.
I clicked [Donate].

PayPal shows the transaction - for exactly the amount I entered.
A cpl days later, my credit card account (that is linked to my PayPal account) shows the charge for the amount I put in at the donation.
No fees!!

What bank is this? I've always donated to charities with credit cards and it's never coded as a cash advance.

I'm pretty sure the charity is paying the credit card fees whether or not you use PayPal.
When I donate by credit card, I'm often asked if I want to increase the donation to cover the CC fee. And yeah, it just appears as a regular purchase on my statements.

Yup. Charities take credit cards, just like any other vendor. It's not a cash advance. Your credit card took the amount you gave, kept 2-3% for themselves, and gave the rest to your charity.

I think I was mis-lead by the credit card rep I talked with.
