I may have been a little fortunate, that the first room that I rented in college was only a few blocks from a grocery store. So it was instilled in me early on, as part of my selection criteria where to live.
Ever since then, I (almost) always have located within walking distance of food. (The only exception being a job I took in a very small town with few open rentals, so ended up living 12 miles away in the boonies).
Why warm up your car to drive a mile? A healthy person can easily walk a mile in 15 minutes. It's simple to bring a bag of groceries back that far. No, it's not a large amount of food, but if you live nearby it's not a big deal to walk 15 minutes again a few days later.
