Title: Trek to the grocery store
Post by: MustacheMike on January 06, 2013, 12:27:13 PM
Having discovered a No Frills store near my place, I thought it fitting that I go check it out for my weekly freezer meal (http://www.lovingmynest.com/food-love/freezer-crock-pot-meals-round-2/ (http://www.lovingmynest.com/food-love/freezer-crock-pot-meals-round-2/)) stock up.

Except....except, due to my self-imposed rule that I won't drive on the weekend, I've got to go for a walk, since I don't have a bike. While Google maps says it takes 7 minutes by car, it takes 45 minutes walking the 3.2km one-way.

Time to put my hiking pack to use. It's a 35 litre backpack meant for hiking. Perfect for the 40lbs or so of cans, veggies and meat.

It was about 90 minutes of exercise while avoiding a car start-up.

That gets bad-ass points from me.

Ditto. That is awesome dedication.

That is awesome!  Great way to multi-task: exercise and grocery shopping.

I wonder who Google based their walking calculations on.  Converting that to miles is somewhere close to 2 miles - they think it would take someone 45 minutes to walk 2 miles?  Man, they must walk really slow!

The majority of the trip is up a steep hill -- I have no idea if Google is able to take that into account. You can power up it in your car, but it is a damn good cardio workout at a brisk march. Also, maybe all the cross walks you've got to wait for?

I may have been a little fortunate, that the first room that I rented in college was only a few blocks from a grocery store. So it was instilled in me early on, as part of my selection criteria where to live.

Ever since then, I (almost) always have located within walking distance of food. (The only exception being a job I took in a very small town with few open rentals, so ended up living 12 miles away in the boonies).

Why warm up your car to drive a mile? A healthy person can easily walk a mile in 15 minutes. It's simple to bring a bag of groceries back that far. No, it's not a large amount of food, but if you live nearby it's not a big deal to walk 15 minutes again a few days later.

Way to go OP.
These Xmas holidays DD and I have been walking to get milk (2-4litres), saving a car trip for a topup of milk.(which inevitably meant we bought other stuff). We use a bush track to short cut the road: 10min down and 30mins up for tubby old me.

very badass! 45 minutes there and then again back with groceries is dedication. my current walk is only 15 min and that's plenty with a weeks shop (especially as it almost always seems to be raining!)

i too try to locate near food, is one of the basics for me. i always want to be within walking distance (<20 min ideal, 30 min max) of food/library/park/train station.

Nice work!  And totally badass.

Our walk is about 15 mins each way, and I feel like a total badass just doing that.  Enjoy your awesomeness knowing that you are doing something that very few would even try, and fewer still could actually do.

You're REALLY going to appreciate a bike when you get one.

That is totally bad ass. What's not badass about society is that trips like these are considered too much of an inconvenience. Can you believe this? Walking 45 minutes vigorously each way is a stupid waste of time and effort to Joe Average. Something is wrong when doing a good thing is seen badly. Keep it up.

I'm doing my badass part, too. I rode my bike to work yesterday (13 hilly miles each way) and rode to and from the train today.
