transitioning into part-time work
« on: April 21, 2015, 07:47:02 PM »
My wife is currently a retail manager and makes 60K, but has to work about 48-50 hours a week. This is too much and not sustainable, so she told her boss last week that she wants to work part-time. She will work 3.5 days a week and make about 30K as a sales person. She will work 3 days a week during 9 months out of the year and work 5 days a week during the 3 busy months of the year. There is a chance that her hourly wage will be the same, but it depends on how much she sells.

I am a prof and currently make 50K. Our combined income will drop from 110K to around 80K. However, we only spend about 4K/month, so I think we have plenty of room to pull this off.

It is very hot and humid during the summer in Florida. We are both very excited about my wife's part-time gig because we will now be spending our summers in the Denver area (May 1st - August 15th) and living with family. My wife can easily transfer with her retail job and I don't have to punch a clock over the summer. Many of our retired neighbors leave during the summer for 6 months. We got inspired and are trying to do something similar. We will only be gone for 3.5 months so our neighbors joke that we are "retirees in training"

I will be leaving with the dog in our car on Friday. My wife will fly a few days later. So stoked.

Sounds awesome. Smart move. No point in delaying life while waiting for the 4% SWR. Bravo sir, and mrsclarkfan1979.

I hear you.  Retail is a very stressful work environment.  Having done that while in college, it is a very draining job.  Good luck to you for this move in life!
