I'm Becoming Mustachian!
« on: July 14, 2015, 05:46:48 PM »
I never thought it would happen, but I am adopting new Mustachian habits.

I thought I would just read other people's posts endlessly, while leaving my procrastination habit in the driver's seat and drifting along, half thrifty half spendy.  Imagine my surprise when I found myself writing a  new Note on my phone, listing all the stops I would go to the next time I deign to drive my car.  Trip planning to reduce driving had become a habit and I hadn't even noticed it!

Other accomplishments:

CAR - Paid off now.  Last car payment ever, DONE!  Also, bought reflectors to reduce the heat of the sun and protect the interior since it's just sitting in the driveway most of the time now.

MEALS - At grocery store, shopping for price (I used to buy anything I wanted, especially organic); buying non-organic if it's fruit/vegie with thick non-edible skin; eating more oats; looking for grocery sale items; started eating beans and rice sometimes.  Also, much more careful now to only buy the amount I will eat, and not let half-eaten portions rot.

MISC - Looking more carefully for free options for entertainment; returning library books on time; even got a couple of home repairs done without calling a pro.

There are more improvements needed, but the bristles of the 'stache have begun.  Thanks to everyone for posting all of their inspiring examples.  Dap and applause accepted - I can use all the momentum I can get!

Good job! Every cent counts. I figured out a couple of weeks ago that going with my colleagues to the canteen for breakfast (subsidized) costs me around 250 Euros a year. I bring my own breakfast now.

Well done, keep up the good work.  Another hint which is very easy is that I like to grow the herbs I would usually buy.  Simple things like this keeps the dollars on your side.

It's amazing how just reading this stuff a few seeds get lodged in your brain and you find yourself doing all kinds of things that you never expected.

buying non-organic if it's fruit/vegie with thick non-edible skin

We (sort of) go by the clean 15 / dirty dozen list here: http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/

If its on the clean 15, not organic.  Dirty dozen sometimes / usually organic, depending on the mark up.  I also grow a bunch of the "dirty dozen" ones -- peppers (hot and regular), tomatoes, collards, spinach alternatives (my favorite is katuk).

Good for you!  At one point I never thought my husband would become mustachian, but he's full force now!  You just gotta start somewhere!
