Anyone use Thread Up or Poshmark to sell clothes/purses online?
« on: February 17, 2016, 08:27:58 PM »
I have a few ( read metric f*#k ton) of new and worn once or twice clothes. I may or may not have a problem buying Ann Taylor or Loft clothes that are on clearance. Tags on, perfect, and do not fit me- such is life. Has anyone tried Thread up, Poshmark or any of the other online retailers that let you post clothes then take a cut?

Confession- I even have two sizes of identical dresses that I bought thru catalog. Why did I return them and get the full flipping price back? Because I am a lackadaisical idiot who couldn't be bothered to stand in line at my crappy post office. Luckily I don't let myself go into those stores anymore. I am reborn. My retail spirit has been washed in the holy waters of MMM. A mere mortal, I don't want to die slowly in the purgatory that is a 40 hour work week- especially for a dress that I can't even wear.

Any leads appreciated!

I haven't used either of those yet, but am planning to list a few items over the next week or two.

Recently I've been hearing about FiveMiles (https://www.5milesapp.com/), which is a website and app people use to sell gently used stuff as well as services. If there's an active community where you live, that might be worth checking out too, especially because it's location-based. (Read: You should be able to do the transactions without a visit to the post office!)

I have been using Posh for over 2 years to sell off items and made over $1600. My biggest complaint is their 20% cut but it's easier to sell on Posh then FB or Ebay for me. A lot of Loft and Ann Taylor items seem to go quickly on Posh but it's all price dependent. You'll get a lot of people saying "trade", which is obnoxious but eventually someone will come along and purchase. Let me know if you have any specific quesitons!

I've had some success with ThredUp. Admittedly, I was more concerned about getting useless clutter out of my closet than I was about the dollar amount I could potentially receive from the items. ThredUp seems like a good way to do that with the added bonus that you might get some cash for your trouble.

The trade-in process does seem to be pretty slow. It took about 3 weeks from the time I sent my items in to the time I got notified of what was accepted. You can use the cash on their site as a credit or deposit it into a PayPal account but you will take a hit for the latter, just as an FYI.

If you feel so inclined, you can use my offer code for ThredUp. $10 credit for each of us. http://www.thredup.com/r/RUJFO4

I've used ThreadUP a few times. It is a slow process on their end, but they make it simple and straightforward to send in clothes and it was worth it to me. They're definitely interested in name brands, so you should do well. I haven't had good luck with anything I have purchased on the site, however. It's much better for me to go to Goodwill and see exactly what I'm buying than rely on a picture and the promise of a brand name.

Good to know ladies! Catstache, I may have some questions for you. I need to gather all my stuff and make a plan. It is a common theme in my life. Have any of you guys tried scratching the clearance stickers off your tags if they are brand new. I have bought $70 pants with tags on, never worn but paid $5. I'm not going to list them for $2. Or is that frowned upon? Either way it is going to happen but I just wanted to know general consensus :)

All the times I paid for clothes that deep down I knew I would never wear. Ahh, the art of pissing away money.

I sold to ThredUp once. They didn't pay very well, but the process was incredibly easy so that made it worthwhile in my mind. Otherwise, it would have just gone to Goodwill.

You also could try selling in the mustache marketplace.

I made close to $1500 on poshmark selling my clothes that are to small, purses, jewlrey etc. My 17 yr old has made about $600. I have some summer clothes I will post in the spring. It's easy, and well worth the time. We had way to many clothes, now we are focusing on capsule wardrobes and quality pieces over quantity.

I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe.  I have so many things in my closet that I just never wear.  I really don't buy that many clothes, but yet still, over the years, have accumulated more clothing than I wear.  I installed the Poshmark app yesterday and will beging culling soon...perhaps then I can work on slowly building a capsule wardrobe.
