Ting!
« on: July 08, 2013, 03:19:26 PM »
This month was my first full usage bill from Ting after making the switch.  Here are the numbers:

Average Sprint bill for unlimited everything:  $111
Ting bill for my actual usage: $31
Inconvenience: 0

Thanks to the MMM forums, I am doing a big ol' happy dance.  :-)

I've had a similar experience as has my bf.  Ting absolutely rocks.

I'm glad to hear success stories about Ting as DW and I are heavily considering switching from Verizon.  Our concern, being "out-state" Nebraska, is Sprint can be spotty but I've read that Ting allows roaming on Verizon.

Has anyone had experience with roaming while using Ting?

I love ting.  We cancelled our Sprint contract and paid a large ETF just to switch to Ting and we will still have saved $500 by the end of this year (we were able to use our Sprint phones on Ting).

I'd really like to switch to Republic Wireless, but their phone option sucks right now.

I believe, technically, you have to have native Sprint coverage at your home address with Ting to qualify for services. They do roam voice services onto Verizon's network, but the key word there is roam. A better option might be PagePlus (in the early stages of being bought out by America Movil, and likely dropped from the Superguide shortly for that reason) or Talk For Good (they're still a little green for an MVNO, no long term existence track record has been established yet).

Thanks I.P.  I will have to continue following the Superguide for ideas!

I love Ting too! I think I've finally got my bill down to $14/month, which is so much better than the $85/month I was paying with Sprint! I love that Ting includes texting to Canada and while in Canada - it keeps my costs down a lot since I would say that 50% of my texting is done to/while in Canada.

I've also started seeing referrals now and I won't pay another Ting bill until December!

I also just got my first Ting bill this month. $27! Love it. I was paying $84 a month for a totally unnecessary unlimited plan with Sprint.

I just moved my teenager to Ting.  We set it up so that he will pay it out of his checking account every month.  I'm giving him $30/ mo toward his cell phone bill and if he keeps it lower than that he gets to keep the difference.

He will have to learn to keep a cushion of $ in his checking account so that Ting can draft it to cover his bill and he'll have to learn to budget his money and reconcile his account every month.  If he screws it up, which is inevitable once or twice, he'll lose phone service which is a pretty painless way to learn.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased with myself today.  ;)   I was paying $160 a month with Verizon and we'll now be <$60/ month.

The downside is that I forgot to use my Ting referral from my account to set up his account.  [facepalm]

How long did you all have to wait for your old Sprint number to be transferred over to Ting?  In other words, how long was the down-time without any phone service?  Ting says it could be a few hours to a day or so, which is a bit of a problem.  My wife and I are on a family plan now which means we'd both have to cancel pretty much simultaneously, and we have no other means of instant communication.  With an infant in the mix and jobs that require active phone service 24/7, this is a bit of a hurdle.

I was on a family plan before I switched over, and when I signed up I only used my phone number. This only affected my number and everyone else remained with Sprint.

My bf switched from Sprint to Ting and his activation was seamless, taking about 4 hours before he was activated on Ting and ready to talk.

My son and I were on a Verizon family plan and I moved my number to Ting last month.  It took about an hour before my phone was activated and ready.  I left my son on Verizon (trying to stage having to pay the cancellation fee!).

Wednesday, right before bedtime, we ported my son's number to Ting from Verizon and when he woke up in the morning his phone was active and ready.

So, you can likely move one phone number now and the other next month.  Or move both right before going to bed and wake up to a new service.

If this was helpful to you, please use my Ting referral code!  ;)   https://zdc23d1jed3.ting.com/
