TFIG is now TGIThurs!
« on: March 11, 2015, 06:12:05 AM »
My plan was to start scaling back my working week next year [2016] by giving up Fridays and having long weekends every week. No fish would be safe Fridays and I could still spend the weekend on other activities with the GF.

Last week the opportunity arose to push the agenda early and got approval to take Fridays off starting in April by working 4 x 10hrs.

That's one of the things I like about having a plan of attack. When you see a chance to move forward you know what your next step is and how it fits into the big FIRE picture.

So now when 2016 rolls around I am going make some 1 month long holidays happen so I can ride my motorcycle down the continental divide and spend a chunk of the winter in Baja surfing.

I love that idea, I thought about transitioning into FIRE a few years early but finding some good paying weekend work. Working 2 x 10 hour shifts and taking M-F off. That would still allow me to pad the 'stache while enjoying off 5 days in a row.

I'm very excited.

Yes 2B1S the next phase of my plan is to start is to start scheduling 2 x 1 month holidays and 1 x 2 month holiday each year so I can reduce my work hours and cross things off my bucket list.

I like the people I work with and see a long-term leadership role with them that only needs me to work 3-6 months a year.

Having that much time off while still earning enough to pay all my bills will be rad....assuming they accept the new reality.

Although never working again sounds good in theory I suspect at some low amount of work hrs/yr I will be fully satisfied with my free time and may also find I can live comfortably off the reduced income while my 'stach grows bushy.

2B1S if you don't mind working weekends I think that would be a very easy gig to sort out simply because most people would prefer to work weekdays and companies are always trying to fill less popular shifts. I have pay all my bills at 20hrs/wk and still save a bit.

Ironically I love working on weekends. It was my favorite part about retail management before getting into software sales.

I would be able to enjoy doing things on weekdays when most people were working, take advantage of midweek specials at campgrounds, lunch specials at restaurants etc. Doing chores like grocery shopping, laundry mat etc was easy because nothing was crowded, the gym was empty by 9 AM.........LOVED IT.

I then switched careers to a traditional 9-6 schedule M-F and the biggest shock to me was how annoying it is to do anything leisure or chore related on a Saturday/Sunday. EVERYONE is out and about, traffic is basically rush hour level where I live, huge crowds everywhere, things are more expensive, no discounts for off peak times.

I think that a strategy of working Sat/Sun when everyone else is off is perfect for FIRE. Whether it be in food service, babysitting, hospitality, or other industries there is always a demand for weekend labor.

If SO and I can both find work where we can get 2 10 hour shifts on the weekend even at a measly $12-15/hr that works out to ~$25-30k/yr. While having 5 days off in a row every single week to adventure around and pursue other interests.

Another scenario I envisioned for myself is possibly doing seasonal work along the lines with what is posted on coolworks.com there are lots of fun and exciting seasonal gigs that pay for room and board, allowing you to explore and adventure in a particularly interesting area on days off while earning income and reaping the benefit of free food and housing.

I would definitely explore these possibilities once I hit a barebones FI number that would cover very basic living expenses. I think It would be worth doing something along these lines vs working another 3-5 years at a typical job before reaching full FIRE.

Both your plans make a lot of sense.  My GF and my friends all work M-F so having weekends off is important to me, but I can see how week days off would be pretty appealing.

As I reduce my working hours I'll be doing my solo stuff during the week [fishing, surfing, motorcycling] and then doing my GF/friends stuff on the weekends [socializing & mountain biking mostly].

You are smart to use FI to reorganize things to optimize them for you. That's the lifestyle equivalent of a low MER investment. ;)
