Going to be saving another $400/mo.
« on: April 05, 2015, 08:05:57 PM »
Two months ago I posted on how I was saving $750-$800/mo. http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/share-your-badassity/cut-my-monthly-expenses-$750-$800!!/

Well, I'm back with more savings - this time another $400/mo.!

Last week my landlord "offered" me the chance to keep my current Manhattan digs for a $250/mo. higher rent. Um, thanks?

No thanks.

I'm moving and will save $350 on rent. I will also save another $40 since my new building has laundry and I won't be using the laundromat anymore. I'll also be a "new customer" with the cable company so that should cut about $30/mo. I'm going to join a slightly more expensive (but much more value) gym that will cut about $10/mo. into those savings.

Total savings ~ $410/mo. (increases savings rate from 59% to 65%)

What are your disadvantages to losing this money?  It seems like you must have some con to this deal.  Whether it is a small place or a large commute to work.

It's a better apartment with a similar commute. I'm just giving up my status neighborhood for a borough neighborhood. Location is everything when it comes to NYC rents. What I'm essentially giving up is proximity to fancy restaurants, fancy retailers, etc. Nothing I really value anymore.

Sweet congrats! People underestimate the power of cheaper "fixed" expenses. To cut an incremental $400 out of your variable spending, such as eating out and entertainment, feels painful. That same $400 is automatically saved because of your decision to move - awesome job!

Yup.  I saved $500/mo on a similar move last year, and I also ditched my $450/mo car payment around the same time.  I'm now saving ~$1400 per paycheck (2x monthly) now in addition to my maxed out 401K.

This sounds like a

WIN (rent), WIN (commute), WIN (away from temptations) to me! Congrats!
