Free Kleenex Replacement
« on: August 17, 2016, 09:05:34 AM »
I have allergies and so I used to use a lot of tissues.  In fact, I used one large box of Kleenex per week on average!  Not only was that a constant drain on my finances, but it resulted in a lot of trash.   Most people here know that handkerchiefs are a suitable replacement for disposable tissues, but I believe I have found something even better!  I simply cut up any old and unwearable t-shirts into squares, and use those.  The interlock knit used in T-shirt fabric does not unravel, so there's no need to seam the edges.  Plus, t-shirt fabric is much softer and more absorbent than handkerchiefs.  I take one of these "handkerchiefs" out of my sock drawer every morning, and I feel comfortable using the same one all day (most days).  I wash these with my regular laundry, and they are still good as new after 5 years of use!  Thus I estimate they have saved me $520 since I began using them, and that doesn't even include investment gains or the cost of extra trash bags!  All from $0 investment and about 10 minutes of time.

Also, you have kept so much trash out of the dump!  Good job!

I have the same allergy problem. But isn't the t-shirt square sometimes still wet when you go to use it again? Also you always need pockets. Stupid womens pants.

You might look into allergy shots. They worked for me. I no longer have any allergens that bother me.

I had them as a kid. Maybe they wear off.

I like to make pretty large squares, and then use different sections of the same cloth.  If it gets wet, it's time for a fresh one!  If you carry a purse, you could keep a few cloths there.

You can develop new allergies too. I did. Now I get to pay $$ for asthma meds...

They can wear off, so much like vaccines you sometimes need a booster, and if you move, your panel of exposed allergens can be totally different (eg in the desert dust mites don't really exist, but up here in the rainy humid northwest they thrive).

we use medical cloths at home for all sorts of things.
they are super absorbent and have cut down our purchasing of napkins and paper towels.
we got them for free from a doctor

thanks for sharing that.. learned something new ;)

I inherited reusable handkerchiefs from Grandpa, I guess they used to be quite common here a couple decades ago.

Wikipedia has a picture:

But the ones I got look nicer :)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
