Spreading the message
« on: May 02, 2014, 03:14:01 PM »
Today I taught the first lesson in a 5-week program on financial literacy to a class of 6th graders! We're going to cover topics like: matching your skills and interests to career fields, budgeting, credit vs. debit cards, credit scores, risk & insurance. I had such a great time today sharing my experiences and am looking forward to the next several weeks!!

The organization provided all the curriculum and materials, and have offices all over the U.S. if anyone else is interested in volunteering: https://www.juniorachievement.org/web/ja-usa/home

Awesome!  I remember taking a class where we talked about how to do checking, interest rates, mortgages, etc.  Very basic but very practical and not nearly so cool as yours sounds!

GREAT!! I don't think we can start teaching young kids the basic concepts of money (making/management, etc.) too soon!  In this day and age, they need to start sooner rather than later with a good financial plan!

Just wanted to update that my last class was last week and it was a great experience! They provide training and all the materials, the teacher stays in the classroom with you, and the kids and program were great. I'd recommend JA to anyone who's interested, and am happy to talk to you about it.

I love this idea!  I am in Canada, I wonder if we have something similar... does anyone know?

I'm glad JA is still out there teaching kids about money and the economy.  I volunteered several years for their "production company" portion and taught several classes on how to speak to an audience.  DECA is another good group of kids to get involved with, but probably not in the cities.

I did this JA lesson in April with a group of 7th graders. I had a really great time too. Financial literacy is by far the most important thing kids should learn in school.
